It really depends on the system. All of the bigger alarm companies use around the same level of product as far as quality. Be advised of the following, what the alarm companys do is sign you to a contract for years at a time. Say 4 yrs for 199.00 Right? ok and what they do is incrementally increase your monthly fee after that. The average total equipment cost for a small residential alarm system is right around that 199.00 wholesale so they lose a few bucks on the initial install to get you signed on for years at a time. ...(Answered by mlk682)

Yes. Just get a photoelectric smoke alarm, preferrably one with a hush button so that you can turn it off for 10 minutes without removing the battery and forgetting to put it back. These alarms are not too expensive and are good also for people who smoke in their bedroom to have in there because smouldering furniture doesnt always set off the other kind of smoke alarm (ionization). Good idea for people who's hallway one goes off from cooking and always take out the batteries, with this kind you don't need to....(Answered by Clay H)

I am watching my parent's house and they have a fairly new Brinks system. I can't remember how they told me to set the alarm when I leave. I thought it was pretty simple. I believe you're in the UK, so the American answers will be totally wrong. It depends on the age of the house. The 1991 Smoke Detectors Act, requires that all new houses that have been built since 1992 must, by law, have a smoke detector installed. The minimum requirement being one smoke alarm on each level of the building. This is not a piece of legislation aimed specifically at residential letting property, but aimed at all new buildings. If an agent installs smoke alarms into properties that he manages or they already exist, care must be taken in ensuring ...(Answered by Bardic)
