How good are home security alarms in apartment buildings ?
Are home security alarms necessary in apartment buildings. We own our condo and were considering installing a home security alarm. What do home security alarms do, what are they capable of ? Is it worth paying $ 30 a month for an alarm ? Is Brinks a good name in the alarm industry. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas.

It really depends on the system. All of the bigger alarm companies use around the same level of product as far as quality. Be advised of the following, what the alarm companys do is sign you to a contract for years at a time. Say 4 yrs for 199.00 Right? ok and what they do is incrementally increase your monthly fee after that. The average total equipment cost for a small residential alarm system is right around that 199.00 wholesale so they lose a few bucks on the initial install to get you signed on for years at a time. ...(Answered by mlk682) |

Yes. Just get a photoelectric smoke alarm, preferrably one with a hush button so that you can turn it off for 10 minutes without removing the battery and forgetting to put it back. These alarms are not too expensive and are good also for people who smoke in their bedroom to have in there because smouldering furniture doesnt always set off the other kind of smoke alarm (ionization). Good idea for people who's hallway one goes off from cooking and always take out the batteries, with this kind you don't need to....(Answered by Clay H) |

one smoke alarm outside each bedroom, one in the stairway upstairs, one just outside the kitchen and one in the laundry room, I also have CO2 detectors neer a heater vent, I have natural gas heat. Make sure they are batery backup alarms and change the batteries twice a year. Most house fires are caused by electrical faults, so if the electricity is out and there is no battery back up. they are useless....(Answered by no_strings_72756) |

I believe you're in the UK, so the American answers will be totally wrong. It depends on the age of the house. The 1991 Smoke Detectors Act, requires that all new houses that have been built since 1992 must, by law, have a smoke detector installed. The minimum requirement being one smoke alarm on each level of the building.
This is not a piece of legislation aimed specifically at residential letting property, but aimed at all new buildings. If an agent installs smoke alarms into properties that he manages or they already exist, care must be taken in ensuring ...(Answered by Bardic) |
