My apartment has termites, Can I protect my furniture from getting termites?
I know my apartment has termites, I have seen them and they are eating all the way through the drywall and paint. I informed my landlord and so far he has not done a thing about it. Meanwhile I just bought some nice furniture, the table are made of wood (it is stained) and the framing of the couches is wood. Is there a way I can protect my furniture other than moving it out?

Go to your local pesticide store and ask them for advice. I just read an article in my local paper written by an exterminator. He said that there is no reason for anyone to hire an exterminator because you can buy the poison yourself and apply it without having to pay for the mark-up and the labor the exterminators will charge you. Maybe your landlord will consider this to save himself some money. If something isn't done you'll find yourself living in the middle of a giant termite mound and he won't have a house to ...(Answered by Buggs) |

What can you do about a meth apartment?
My husband and I moved into an apartment 3 months ago. Ever since we moved in we have both been sick. My husband has had serious hives for the past 2 months. We really suspect that our apartment has been used as a meth lab in the past. The apartment stinks horrible. It burns your eyes and throat just to be in it. What are some other signs of meth labs? Also, if it has been a meth lab, is any of our stuff salageable? or will everything have to be thrown away?

Send a certified letter to the landlord stating your immediate health issues. Get the heck out! It's not worth being sick!...(Answered by Lake Lover) |

What are the disadvantages of living in an apartment/condominium compared to a standalone house?
I've been living in a standalone house/terrace house most of my life apart from a couple of years when I lived with someone else in an apartment. From my experience, living in a standalone residence has a lot of disadvantages, especially mine being a terrace (me and my next-door neighbors sharing the same walls). In addition, neighbors know when you leave the house, come home, water the plants, clean the car, have your bath etc. cos there's hardly any privacy (unless one lives in a rich residential area, but most of us aren't that fortunate).
One of the disadvantages of living ... (Asked by xander) |

I live in a high-rise so only the neighbors on the side bother me (it's cement above--hardly hear anything).
Disco Sucks! It has that boring beat and my neighbor has it on from the minute he comes home to the minute he goes to bed. Grrr!
But there are advantages, it is much safer than a stand alone house, you are just one of many. the privacy issue doesn't bother me, I don't care if someone knows I took a shower. Although I am conscious of taking one so late or early that it bothers them.
I would prefer living in a ...(Answered by chante) |

I have a cockroach problem in my apartment?
I live in one of those buildings with an outdoor fire escape in NYC, so it's pretty old... I kept finding roaches in my room and all over the apartment even though I left no food in sight. Someone told me to leave some kinda poison around, but I don't want to find dead roaches randomly all over the apartment. There are some roaches in my closet for some reason and it isn't that crowded in there... still I'd hate to find dead roaches near my clothes. Is there some kinda way that I can trap these roaches or drive ... (Asked by Ethan) |

Put boric acid (the ingredient in Roachpruf; if you can't find it at Lowe's or Home Depot, buy boric acid at the pharmacy-- smaller amount and more expensive that way, though) along every spot where the wall meets the floor or countertop. The roaches take it back to the nest, so you won't see a bunch of dead roaches all over the place.
The boric acid clogs the air pores in the roaches' thorax (how insects breathe) and has the added bonus of being poisonous, too.
I've always used this method, and it hasn't failed yet....(Answered by holey moley) |

Narrow down to what you only NEED for that month only. Since you will be in very close quarters you don't want your stuff getting on everyones nerves. (no pictures, etc.) Maybe get a sleeping bag once you are over there (don't bring it with you on the plane...just added stuff you have to carry through the airport). Then you can unroll it and use that to define your space. Maybe get light fabric that can hang with velcro from the ceiling and seperate your space even more, but make sure the velcro can ...(Answered by atlantagal) |

When living in a city apartment, what is the point of a studio apartment?
I mean im new to this, i've never heard of this kind of apartment b4. I've heard of Lofts and i actually think there cool looking. But if you live in a studio, then your bedroom is in the middle of the living room, kitchen, and its right next to the front door. Can you ever have people over? Do you live in one and what do you think of it?

Rent in most big cities can be really expensive. If you're single, then a studio is the cheapest way to live.
Yes, it's uncomfortable, but that's the price to pay for the luxury of living in the city.
I live in Toronto, and rents are sky-high in the downtown area. I live in a small one-bedroom. It's really small (not a studio though), but I wouldn't give up the size if it meant giving up my location. I love my neighborhood, and if I had to choose a studio to be able to live here I would....(Answered by catwomanmeeeeow) |

How to find an apartment long distance?
I'm going to move 500 miles. What's the best way to find a place to live in this situation? I'm not looking for a roommate situation this time, so that might make it slightly harder, having to sign a lease.
I'll be changing jobs as well since my company doesn't have an office there. Should I ask for extra time before starting my new job, so that I can go there, search for apartments, then come back and move my stuff? Or should I move there into a temporary housing so I can look from there? I have furniture and stuff ... (Asked by Jorge) |

Depending on your financial situation, it would be best to give yourself some time to check out your new city. Put your stuff in temporary storage and find a hostel/hotel/room that you can rent by the day, or week. This will give you time to find a place you really like and you won't have to worry about getting badly surprised by a horrible place after you've signed the lease.
Also check out sub-letting (usually short term renting). Many people who are going away for a short period of time sub-let their apartments/houses. You can usually get ...(Answered by mcvanhenley) |
