When the smokers in lowerlevel smoke outside on their patio it seems to come in to the upper level Tried fans blowing outwards but it still seems to come in Why should one be forced to close windows all the time? Depending on where you live, there a laws about public smoking - also there are evasive laws for tenants - you do not have to be subject to another tenants uncleanliness - since this smoke will stain your walls and curtians and cause you to have to clean them this law applies to you. I'd go talk to your property manager, and if that doesn't work, I'd go directly to the management company - If that still does you no good, call your local tv station, they have a depatment just for human intrest stories, plead your case to them, if ...(Answered by Lorri N)

Why are there cracks in the walls of my apt?
Is this a sign of a cracked foundation? I have noticed some cracks in the walls of my apt (nothing real huge) I also see cracks coming off of the area where the windows are framed. They are in the hallway of the apt too, and I am assuming the other apts have similar cracking. I dont own the building and will be moving soon, I am just curious about it. I also noticed a lot of seams in the walls. It appears the landlord used some kind of tape to cover something up and ... (Asked by ♥♫♥ Crystal ♥♫♥)

A.
Its a common thing. with the settling of the building, as it ages. All walls (most) are taped and mudded. Its a procedure done with drywalling. The seams are taped over with a paper like tape, then 'mudded' over to fill in the seams where the sheetrock pieces come together. It is then painted over. It is all to hide the seams!...(Answered by firedup)

Splitting heating system for 2 apartments?
we have a rental property with 2 apts on the 1st floor -a 3 bedroom & a studio. Right now they are both heated by one forced hot water by gas heating system. Both have separate thermostats. We would like to separate the two so tenants can pay their own utilities but are reluctant to incur the expense of installing a new boiler just for the studio. Are there any less expensive options? A few years ago,a plumber had said that even a hot water heater would be sufficient to heat that small studio apt but I am not sure ... (Asked by A L)

Q.
What can I do about 2nd-hand cig smoke coming into my apt via A/C vents, from the upstairs apt?
My apts were built in the 70's but have had good upkeep and maintenance (I thought). The neighbors upstairs chain-smoke, and all day and all night till 5am I am smelling the 2nd hand smoke that comes into my apartment through the a/c vents. It's disgusting and stinks, and makes my eyes burn. What can I do to make the apt mgr do something? I've told her about 4 times, and she says there is nothing she can do about it that I just have to live with it, burn a candle or something! I've ... (Asked by dixygirl5)

Obviously your snake has not reached the clog, or is being diverted to the vent. This is beyond your equipment, and expertise and anything I tell you is going to lead to the same result; save yourself the aggravation and call roto-rooter, get a quote before the work starts and ask about the guaranty. Be sure to tell them that there is acid in the pipe....(Answered by champ2785)

Q.
Can thermostats in other apts affect my heat?
I live in an apt building that was converted from an old (1850) building. There are 10 apts and one industrial-sized coal furnace. We all have hot water radiators. I have a thermostat and it's usually set at 60 to 65 degrees. At the same time every night, the heater kicks on, heats my apt to 75 degrees for an hour and then goes completely cold. I have a brand new thermostat that works fine any other time. Can thermostats in other apts affect my heat? If it's a coal furnace that must be stoked each night, could that affect ... Central heat (of any source) in a 10 unit complex is poor design. Space conditioning needs to be done one-by-one. The controls in your building would have to "average" the individual demand from individual thermostats and then push the heater to respond to that average. You probably have a few fellow residents turning off their heat at night. Unless you augment your space with heaters, you are fighting a losing battle in that building....(Answered by James H)
