Q.
I'd like to know why there appears to be no water in the u bend under the shower tray? Is there a leak?
A similar question was asked a few months ago about toilets - I'm not sure if I've a similar problem here. The shower room is downstairs, another bathroom upstairs, and no problems anywhere else (kitchen, washing machine, etc.) Last year the builder fitted a nice stone cover around and over the outside drain, which the shower pipe under the shower tray goes into - since then, we've noticed we can hear other water draining through the pipe (when the washing machine pumps out, for example, the kitchen is the next room along from the shower room), and there is no ... Has the stone completely sealed over the outside drain? If so when water drains out and into the drain it could cause air pressure in the pipe and cavity to drop, potentially enough to drain a shallow shower trap by sucking the water through. Alternatively the stone cap may not allow the sound of running water to escape into the environment and the sound waves may reverberate in the pipework more. If the shower trap is draining because of the new stone then you may need to add an air inlet to one of the vertical downpipes higher in the system. This ...(Answered by Alan C)

Bending square tubing??
I am building a 3 foot wide wrought iron garden gate. I would like to bend some 1" 16 gauge tubing to go over the top of the gate. Any ideas how to do this at home without distorting the tubing or kinking it? I see gates all the time like this but unsure how they bend the tubing. ... (Asked by crawschecker)

A.
Dear Sir: The gates you have seen were fabricated with a special tool for bending square tube. The tool is build in such a way that it compresses the sides of the square tubing to create a dimple like crease in the sides and on the inside edge (not sure about that edge). You did not mention how you were going to join the sections of tubing together - brazing, welding, nuts and bolts, flat plate supports like a gusset... If you are welding the gate together, and only making one of them, I would suggest that you contact local welders and welding shops near you and ...(Answered by zahbudar)

How to slide a long rubber handgrip onto a multi bend metal powdercoated handlebar...?
I have a "Joe Weider" home gym that i'm putting together; the instructions say simply "slide the rubber grip onto the bar" year right... the bar has 2 90 degree bends, the rubber grip makes it past the first bend and doesn't go any further. I tried to put some soapy water on the bar... still didn't slide on... ... (Asked by avp071)

First make sure that you are sliding it the grip on from the right direction. Then apply a little bit of WD-40 inside the grip, and on the bar at the point where it won't go any further and simply slide the rubber grip onto the bar....(Answered by jacksfullhouse)

How can I make a sheet of metal with a mdf backing glued to it rigid, so that it does not bend out of shape ?

Q.
Can a mobile home with a bent frame be straightened or leveled?
Like the mobile homes in Arkansas waiting to go to Katrina victims I own a mobile home that has a "bent frame". It has a high corner. Does anyone know if it will settle and equalize over time... or, a method of correction? ... (Asked by Suzanne B)

A.
YES is can be leveled, dont bother to straighten it, damage is done and no need to weaken the metal anymore, usual way to level is to start high to low, with this situation start center and work both ways out (if it is bent curve up/down) if it is bent out/in (creating a C) then it wont matter, no need for any special complications and no need to be an architect, hands on experience works better...(Answered by rick_2948161)

Q.
Every winter the downspout on the south east corner of my house freezes at the bend, breaks the seam and leaks
The City of Toronto has a downspout disconnect program in which I participated. Initially I had the water go into a rain barrel but the bend in the downspout, before the run off pipe began, would always freeze and spill water out on to the walkway between my house and my neighbours and create a scary ice patch. I finally got rid of the rain barrel thinking the diversion mechanism was slowing the water down to the extent that it would allow the water to freeze. I have had the downspout replaced with 4" aluminum downspout which has frozen and ... (Asked by goof)

Bent brick wall bent inwards!!!!?
We recently bought a house to develop, on the side of the house at the top where the roof is the wall has bent inwards - we had a builder look at this and it is potentially very dangerous. What has caused this to happen? ... (Asked by The not so silent one)

A.
That is actually not that uncommon with clay brick walls. Red clay bricks are some of the heaviest and most durable in the world, though that comes with its disadvantages. The load-bearing supports inside the house might not be able to contain the outward pressure of the roof. This, along with the weight pressing down on the outside wall will cause the top of the wall to bow towards the outside, which is the only place for the force to go. To combat this, most engineers put a sheet of plastic against the brick wall and ...(Answered by rawson_wayne)
