I'd like to know why there appears to be no water in the u bend under the shower tray? Is there a leak?
A similar question was asked a few months ago about toilets - I'm not sure if I've a similar problem here. The shower room is downstairs, another bathroom upstairs, and no problems anywhere else (kitchen, washing machine, etc.) Last year the builder fitted a nice stone cover around and over the outside drain, which the shower pipe under the shower tray goes into - since then, we've noticed we can hear other water draining through the pipe (when the washing machine pumps out, for example, the kitchen is the next room along from the shower room), and there is no ... Has the stone completely sealed over the outside drain? If so when water drains out and into the drain it could cause air pressure in the pipe and cavity to drop, potentially enough to drain a shallow shower trap by sucking the water through.
Alternatively the stone cap may not allow the sound of running water to escape into the environment and the sound waves may reverberate in the pipework more.
If the shower trap is draining because of the new stone then you may need to add an air inlet to one of the vertical downpipes higher in the system. This ...(Answered by Alan C) |

Bending square tubing??
I am building a 3 foot wide wrought iron garden gate. I would like to bend some 1" 16 gauge tubing to go over the top of the gate. Any ideas how to do this at home without distorting the tubing or kinking it? I see gates all the time like this but unsure how they bend the tubing.

Dear Sir:
The gates you have seen were fabricated with a special
tool for bending square tube. The tool is build in such a
way that it compresses the sides of the square tubing
to create a dimple like crease in the sides and on the
inside edge (not sure about that edge). You did not
mention how you were going to join the sections of
tubing together - brazing, welding, nuts and bolts,
flat plate supports like a gusset...
If you are welding the gate together, and only making one of them, I would suggest that you contact local welders
and welding shops near you and ...(Answered by zahbudar) |

Bent brick wall bent inwards!!!!?
We recently bought a house to develop, on the side of the house at the top where the roof is the wall has bent inwards - we had a builder look at this and it is potentially very dangerous.
What has caused this to happen?

That is actually not that uncommon with clay brick walls. Red clay bricks are some of the heaviest and most durable in the world, though that comes with its disadvantages. The load-bearing supports inside the house might not be able to contain the outward pressure of the roof. This, along with the weight pressing down on the outside wall will cause the top of the wall to bow towards the outside, which is the only place for the force to go. To combat this, most engineers put a sheet of plastic against the brick wall and ...(Answered by rawson_wayne) |
