Q.
Are kitchen knives that 'never need sharpened' harder on cutting boards than the smooth edged ones that do?
'Never needs sharpening' sounds pretty nice, but when you look at the blade, there are a thousand tiny tines that look like they would just rip a cutting board to shreds. Then you look at your typical knife that needs the occasional sharpening. The edge is smooth. I just got a new cutting board that i love and was wondering wich type of knife would be best to use on it. Thanks! ... (Asked by apriljaymes)

Q.
Our deck boards are starting to splinter. Is there anything we can do to prevent this?
The boards are a teak wood. The spliters are very fine, and painful. Our granddaughter gets them in her hands and legs all the time. We don't allow her to go barefoot over the deck. Is their a shellack or something we can paint over the boards to seal them and prevent splinters? We would love to keep the deck. Hope someone can advise me. ... (Asked by bluebyou)

Putting anything on top of a wax based preservative like Thompsons will not stick and create a huge problem. Wax bases preservative last a year and don't protect very well. The reason people buy expensive teak is that it is virtually maintenance free so try to avoid staining if if you can. Sanding will reduce the splinters but you then need to look to the cause. Something is making teak do this not just the weather in my opinion. If the structure is settling or things are shifting around, something is striking or roughing the surface, I ...(Answered by stevetower)

Q.
Do bamboo cutting boards have the same natural antibacterial effect as wooden ones do?
Supposedly wooden cutting boards are so great because after 30 seconds of washing them, as they dry, the bacteria dies off naturally since it cannot survive in the porous surface. Bamboo is strong like wood but is actually a grass. Because of this i almost wonder if bacteria could survive better in the cuts, or am i wrong? Does the bacteria die off when bamboo dries? I'm looking for a new cutting board, and since bamboo has become so popular, it's almost hard to avoid. Should i try one, or stick to regular hard wood? http://www.ozarkwest.com/wocubovsplcu.html this is one link, but i ... (Asked by apriljaymes)

Your information is incorrect- wooden boards DO carry bacteria if not washed with soap and disinfected. Any cutting board that has had raw meats on it need to be washed and bleached thoroughly. Bamboo is the same- ANY SURFACE must be bleached and cleaned after using food products on it....(Answered by Lynn A)

in general, scrub with hot soapy water and then rinse with bleach water solution. I keep a poultry board, heavy poly, (no pun intended) and a rectangular metal metal tray (not cookie sheets) separate from all others. I have several of those metal trays (18X24 in.) and specific boards for various jobs. Don't forget to wash the knives and slicers as you do the cutting boards....(Answered by Diogene's Dog)

Acacia is a hardwood like maple. It is common material for cutting boards, and should hold up just fine. All wood will show cuts, but as wood is somewhat self-healing, it isn't a big deal...consider it to be "character". It doesn't gouge like plastic....(Answered by Mark O)
