THERE ARE RUN CAPS AND THERE ARE START CAPS.
RUN CAPS ARE CAPACITORS THAT ARE IN THE CIRCUIT AND
ENERGIZED ALL THE TIME THAT THE MOTOR IS RUNNING.
THEY HAVE A LIFE OF PERHAPS 5 TO 15 YEARS BUT SOME
OF THE IMPORTS FROM CHINA,ECT MAY LAST ONLY A FEW
MONTHS. THEY ARE USUALLY FOUND ON THE COMPRESSOR
IN AN AC UNIT AND MAKE IT RUN MORE EFFICIENTLY AND
HAVE MORE RUNNING TORQUE/POWER FOR THE COMPRESSOR
LOAD. THE INSULATION (OIL IMPREGNATED PAPER)
BETWEEN THE TWO CONDUCTORS(ALUMINUM FOIL) FAILS
EVENTUALLY AND AN ARC OCCURS BETWEEN THE FOILS
CAUSING A SHORT CIRCUIT WHICH CAUSES A SUDDEN
HEAT WHICH CAUSES HOT GAS ...(Answered by hghjsln) |

With these types of motors, they come with a small wiring diagram, usually on the cover plate, where the wiring is located.
Look at inside of it, it will tell you what wires go where.
There are usually two sets, one for 220V and the other for 120V.
So take another look for that information. If you can't find it, visit the Honeywell website, they should be able to help you there....(Answered by johnb693) |

What is a capacitor in a central air unit?
I am just curious as to what the capacitor looks like, because I am thinking it might be the thing with the little metal fin like things that go all the way around the outside unit. Am I right about this, if I am not what is it called? A filter maybe?

The fin thingys are the evap coils. They help the unit cool off the head pressure after the coolant saturation has been utilized. Those little fins server to aide cooling by allowing more surface contact for the air to enable convective heat dissipation.
The capacitor is a moderately small silver thingy by all of the other electrical components and acts like a "battery" to help that big motor in the compressor strart turning. Remember that I said battery about the compressor, make sure to discharge a capacitor by grounding the positive terminal before handling such a large capacitor ...(Answered by Charles E) |

A/C unit fan motor capacitor?
My A/C unit stopped cooling and would not turn back on, Theromstat said it was in Heat mode. I switched the breaker off the back on...no luck. Tech came to work on unit and said the capacitor was bad.......would turning off/on the breaker cause a power enough power surge to fry the capacitor.??

The capacitor is most likely the reason the unit shut off in the first place. A capacitor will not be affected by just flipping a circuit breaker off and on as they charge and discharge to try to keep the voltage the same. It would take a high voltage spike to affect a capacitor.
The run capacitor for the fan went bad causing the condenser fan to run very slowly and was not cooling the condenser as it is intended to do. This excessive heat caused the unit to shut down....(Answered by ApplianceGuy) |

Connecting a new microwave capacitor?
I have a Whirlpool microwave oven and the capacitor went out. I ordered a new one but, like a knucklehead, didn't plug the old one back in so I'd know where the leads went. Can anyone help? One fat red wire comes from the magnetron but has a ground loop spliced in at the end along with the female "plug" that plugs into one of the male "prongs" of the capacitor. The transformer has two wires with female "plugs"; one fat and one skinnier red wire. The capacitor is an Aerovox N50H2195G36R with ... (Asked by mike m) |
