A.
It creates a phase difference between windings in the motor. This will start the motor turning. Remove the belt and ensure everything is turning freely. If either the motor or blade do not turn easily it will not be able to build up speed. In a three phase motor the capacitor is not needed....(Answered by warren914)

Sounds Like a Capacitor....G-F 150 [as In Gig-Farad ] Sometimes used For Switch/Start on these Light Fittings....and No not Conventional 630 Volts as You may Know it....very often it relates to the " Firing Voltage" required to ignite the gas in the light Fitting....Phew ! ..Round Floro's..Good Luck...(Answered by geoff a)

To test electrically (out of circuit):Take an analogue ohm meter and put it across the leads ,if good the needle will jump to 0 ohms(peg) then drift down as the capacitor charges. if open nothing will happen,if shorted it will give a steady low ohm reading(they usually go open)....(Answered by paulofhouston)

Guess this is a motor start capacitor. Get to the motor so you can see it run, then put power on briefly... does it run, or just sit there and hum..? If it runs, great. if it hums, flick it with piece of wood to make it turn (saves cut fingertips!!!) Does it run? If you can make it run, go to your domestic spares shop, take the capacitor, get a replacement(they are cheap enough) , replace the capacitor with new....try now...does it run..? if it does, you win, else its new motor time...sorry....(Answered by johncob)

Q.
Hello! I'm on a work site and need lots of high wattage work lights. How can I without blowing a fuse?
I'm preparing a work site and need to hook up five or six 1000 watt work lights to properly light the area at night. I have an outdoor outlet onsite, but that's five or six thousand watts of juice, which will surely blow a fuse or tip a breaker. Is there any way I can run the lights off the commercial power without doing that? Is there a capacitor or something I could buy? ... (Asked by Norm)

A.
You have the right idea. If you try and run 6KW off of one outlet then you are tripping a breaker or blowing a fuse. You will have to get a generator to power the lights, either that or at least 3 more lines out there from the commercial source. some one already gave you the formula to find the current. I = W/V eg. ( 50A = 6KW / 120V )...(Answered by fordman)

You listed a number of items tried in vane however did you try the a different outlet. Homeowner refrigerant dehus in a word are cheap and seldom worth having repaired regardless of who does the work. Check the line to make sure that it is not protected by a GFCI outlet. If there is a GFCI make sure to reset it and plug the dehu back in to check its operation....(Answered by Handy but Perplexed)

without giving away my idea :) i need to know how i can install a light bulb as small or smaller than a christmas light inside of my sculpture and have it run on batteries. is there anything i need to know as far as wattage or basically to make sure the battery doesnt blow up the sculpture? im guessing i will need 9 tiny lights. also how do i connect them? just solder the wires to the battery input? or is there a whole complicated system of capacitors and whatnot i have to deal with? does the size of the wire ... A.
You can buy strings of little bright LED Christmas lights that run on batteries. Wire size doesn't matter; you can either use the string as it is or re-string them. The advantage of buying them already assembled is that you don't have to think about that stuff. http://www.littlebrightlights.com/site/1435548/page/777017 Good luck!...(Answered by Steve H)

Q.
Does an a/c motor need a capacitor?
I'm trying to convert a hand crank meat grinder into an electric one. I know that the motor and grinder need to be connected by 2 pulleys and a wheel. The motor I have is a 1/3 HP and comes from a dishwasher. There is some kind of coil in the wiring before the current gets to the motor. Do I need this coil/capacitor for the motor to work or can I just splice the motor to an electric cord and add an on/off switch? ... (Asked by paul67337)

Don't know much about electricity do you? Ok for the start! House hold current is single phase! 120/220 volts AC First thing you need to do is look on the motor name tag and see if the motor is 220 VAC or 120VAC! If it is 220VAC you are going to have to run 220 to the motor from your breaker box. You will not be able to use your 120 plugs. You will have to get an Electrician for that. Next thing you are going to have to do is again look on the motor name tag to see if the motor ...(Answered by JUAN FRAN$$$)

Q.
how do i check a capacitor with a volt or ohm meter on a Kenmore dehumidifier?

A.
Checking the capacitor is fairly simple. You will need an analog (vane type) multimeter or ohmmeter. Set the meter in the highest ohms scale. Touch the two terminals with the test leads and you will see the reading gradually get higher. Reverse the test leads and you will see a spike in the reading. The gradual climb of the reading indicates the capacitor is charging and the spike reading with the reversal of the leads is the discharge If you need further assistance just click on my name and contact me and I will be glad to help....(Answered by ApplianceGuy)
