How do I deter cats from house plants?
How do I stop my cats from gnawing on and digging in my indoor pot plants?
The bitter apple sounds like a great idea, does anyone know if it or a similar product is available in New Zealand?
Mr. Answer, I never said I blamed the cats, I love my cats, I just don't want them chewing the plants (sort of like when you don't want them jumping on the bench) and am looking for practical ideas.

There's a product that is used for dog training called grannick's bitter apple. You can find it at petco in the dog section. It tastes really bad, but doesn't hurt them at all. (They do make a version for cats, but it's the same thing).
My cat was chewing on my Christmas tree until I coated it with bitter apple. She hasn't gone near it since!

I think the most important thing to do is figure out a cover for the sandbox. Some stores sell sandbox covers, but a tarp weighted down with rocks should do the trick.
My cat HATES the smell of basil, so you might try planting lots of that around the edges of your property. You only need one plant -- you can snip off bits, put it in a small pot of soil, and keep it watered until it starts growing new leaves, and then you'll have as many as you need. Even if it doesn't work, at least you'll ...(Answered by Madame M) |

How do I keep cats away from my birdfeeder?
I just hung a birdfeeder, but I know that several of our neighbors let their house cats outside and I don't want the cats to use the birdfeeder as a hunting ground. (I've seen them hunting and even found their "leftovers" a few times.)

Get some opaque plastic and cut it out to bend and make a collar you can hang BELOW the feeder, so that the 'wide end' is toward the ground and the thin end is fastened to the bottom of the feeder. Make sure that if a cat jumps onto it, the plastic will bend and drop the cat, and make sure it's at least 3' across at the widest spot. do the same thing at the top if the feeder is in a tree or a place a cat can climb so the birds can go to the ...(Answered by Kris L) |

How to protect tree trunk from clawing cats?
We put an expensive ash tree in the center of our front yard, and it is tall but still young. (The trunk is maybe 5 inches in diameter.) Well, our cat--and probably all the other neighborhood cats!--uses it as a scratching post! It's looking quite shredded, and I'm afraid the scratches are going to kill the tree. For the last couple years we had put a black flexible ribbed plastic pipe around the trunk to keep the cats away, but the tree outgrew it. Is there something else we can install?

Wrap some wire mesh fencing (the kind that has about 1/2 inch square holes) a couple of times around the trunk, about 3 feet up from the ground. Make it slightly bigger than the trunk diameter (to allow for future growth). You can use pieces of wire or zip ties to hold the cylinder of wire mesh together - leave it loose around the trunk. The cats will give up.
This is also effective for keeping rabbits or other animals from chewing on bark....(Answered by Paul in San Diego) |
