How come Brand new Doublewides are made so cheaply, and sold so expensive?
Went to LTS Homes in NY, and although from the outside it's inviting apart from the cement slab the walls inside I noticed either had cracks in it, or tissue thin. I noticed stains around the windows on the ceiling, so I don't think the roof handles well with rain and such. These homes go for over $70,000 , so how do they get away with making them so cheaply and sell them for a lot, when it isn't a real home?

You're being unfair. Do you realize the home you saw was set up TEMPORARILY? It probably does have cracks and leaks, but it's on movable terrain. When they are set up permanently the chances of all that stuff occurring is negligible. Also, as was stated, all the homes come with a one year waranty. ANY problems will be fixed for one full year.
Also, perhaps the home you saw was an entry level one. I have seen high end homes START at $80K and go up with adding options.
One more thing, I think what you thought was ...(Answered by saaanen) |

Put up a "beware of dog" notice. If you dont want to get a dog - record the most fierce sounding dog barking you can find. Play it loudly if you hear anyone prowling around outside!! I also leave my sons shoes on show .... he has the biggest feet of anyone I know.. hopefully the burgulars will see these and think they are at the home of a big tough guy - shame my son is only 13 and a gentle giant!!!!!!...(Answered by molehunter) |

You can buy machines that generate background noises to drown out sound; or running a window air conditioner can sometimes achieve the same result.
You can hang rugs/blankets/wall hangings on the walls/door to increase sound absorbtion/blocking. And putting down a rug or carpeting on the floor will reduce the amount of sound coming through from a floor below....(Answered by L.G.) |

Shade trees are a long term way, but it takes patience. Consider something fast growing and plant to shade windows/doors openings. Open windows during the night when the air is cooler - shutting them in the morning when temps start to rise. Have room-darkening shades on the windows that get direct sun. Awnings on windows. Consider a deck with a gazebo type roof above some windows. Plan the air circulation through the house, don't just have fans everywhere pointing every which-a-way. Bring up air from the basement. Some type of dehumidifier (although many models throw off warmed air, be ...(Answered by sq) |
