Q.
Need information about the Tennessee Red Cedar & Novelty Co of Chatanooga, TN, regarding an old cedar chest.?
Chest is solid cedar with darkened (varnish?) finish. Has four clove legs, about 15" off floor. Trying to decide if I should strip off old blackened finish and expose wood or leave old finish alone as being more valuable. Front of chest has sunken raised panel with small wooden lattice around the front face. Believe piece originally made about 1920-1930, perhaps earlier. Would like information about refinishing and/or the company that made the chest. ... (Asked by JOANNIE)

You are showing your age, too young to remember a pie chest. Where I came from we called them a pie safe. Which was a place to put your pies to keep them safe from the flies. You see (or at used to see) the same thing in dinners were the pies were in a stacked glass case where you picked out the piece you wanted....(Answered by Debora H)

Q.
i live in nyc - where can i go to find an inexpensive, less than $100, black dresser/chest of drawer?
I reside in NYC and I'm looking for a store I can buy a black or dark wood chest/dresser for under $100. I would consider purchasing something and staining or painting it myself though it would be better if it was already the desired color. I'll also consider ordering online if there isn't a place around here to buy one from though I don't really want to pay for shipping. I've looked at Ikea, Target, Kmart and Walmart but they don't have anything under $100. Thanks ... (Asked by cherron g)

A.
I'm not sure of a source that may have a cushioned top other than eBay. However, this is very easy to make. Purchase a used hope chest at a yard sale or flea market. Distress, paint, or stencil it any way you want. Buy some foam cushions at a fabric store or foam outlet. Purchase some fabric you want for the top. Make the cushion top by placing the foam on top of the chest and laying the fabric over the cushion. Nail the fabric to the top of the chest with decorative upholstery ...(Answered by Glorybee)

A.
I agree with the anser above that you could replace the medicine chest with a framed mirror if you have ample storage in the vanity for items you would need to place in the chest. Remember, these originated in an era when pedestal sinks were in used, making the medicine chest a multifunctional requirement in the bathroom. Recently I was in Walmart and they had a very large round black-framed mirror that sound as tho it would be perfect for your space. You could even take gold leaf and highlight the relief design in the frame to ...(Answered by blueyes)
