Q.
Extension cord for the washing machine nearly burned. Why the fuse didn't blow?
The cord of my washing machine is too short to reach the nearest socket. So I use the extension cord. The extension cord has nearly burned, got hot and brown. I think the socket of the washing machine was not completely inserted. I got another extension cord, but it is getting uncomfortably warm/hot. I don't dare to run the washer at 60 C. I know, in the instructions it says one shouldn't use the extension cord but there simply isn't any other place I can put the washing machine. Is something wrong with the washing machine? Wiring? Just the one ... (Asked by Olga S)

ack every answer is wrong in some way, hehe....and some right in someways also. Ok...first off the cord burned(actually started to melt right?) why? Because it was NOT rated for the current needed to run a washer..The FUSES or breakers have NOTHING to do with this happening...They will only ytrip if you overload the circuit...but what you did was to NOT overload the circuit, but overload the wire! Thus the wire started to melt... someof those extension cords are Only rated at 10 amps sometimes less...and a washer runs at more than that...YOU can ...(Answered by Darkgoth)

extension cord ground plug?
i broke my ground on my outside extension cord and what i did now is plug that cord into another 3 prong extension cord, is this now safe to use??? thanks all ... (Asked by Perrym_60)

Replace the plug end of the cord. Its an easy repair, you can find replacement plugs anywhere even wal-mart. All you need is a pair of cutters and a screwdriver. A cord that is grounded will not ground one that is not. Fix it if you want to salvage it,new cords arent that much, I would recommend going with a 12 guage cord. They cost a little more, but they carry the power load much much better. You can actually harm the motor on a power tool or implement by using an under rated cord....(Answered by Dave)

Electric Dryer Cord Problem (Change it?)?
My roommates and I bought a used washer/dryer combo for use in our rented home. However, the cord doesn't match the outlet. Here is a comparison pic I made: http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/1526/cordcomparisoncg5.jpg Would it be easier (and safe) for me to change out the power cord? If so, could I just buy a new one from a hardware store? Or would it be better for me to get an electrician to change the outlet for me? Thanks. ... (Asked by dood_lee)

I would go with a electriican. If the cord dosent match your plug, It could be a different wattage. I would not recommend touching electricity if you dont know what your doing. Save yourself the pain and problems call an electrician!...(Answered by ohdarnitsmeagain)

Q.
Ground for Extension Cord?
I have a heavy duty extension cord for power equipment. The ground (third prong) broke off of it (I don't know how or when). If I plug this cord that doesn't have a grounding prong into, say, a surge protector that does have a grounding prong and I plug that into the wall, will the extension cord be grounded? ... (Asked by cirestan)

A.
No, your heavy duty extension cord is not grounded now. Plugging it into other things (whether they are grounded or not) will not remedy this. If the power tools that you are using have only 2 prongs on their plugs, then I wouldn't worry about this at all. If you want to salvage your cord and restore its grounding capability, then purchase a new plug end (~$10, Lowes) and follow the instructions on the box to connect it. You will need to cut off the old one, and use a pair of insulation strippers and a phillips head screw driver ...(Answered by firm_shake)

how to repair vertical blinds cord?

A.
Open the blinds to about the halfway point. The string that opens the blinds is attached to a bracket, you should see it in the guiderail, above the blind you are using to close them. There should be a second bracket, or second side to that existing bracket, that will take the string to close the blinds. First, you need to feed the string up thru the end of the bar, over the little guide pully. Then bring it across the rail to that bracket, and tie it off....(Answered by thewrangler_sw)

Just a chance but you are referring to the bathroom main light not one on say a heater as some have a fan heater and light in one unit This will NOT be on the lighting circuit but possibly on it's own fused outlet which should be situated outside the bathroom this is a small square box similar in looks to a telephone socket but is fitted with a removable cartridge fuse like in a 13amp plug The other possibility is ???? have you actually tried changing the bulb as it could have blow when it got shorted out at the ...(Answered by Roger)

Extension Cord for Pool Pump has black / burnt prongs...Why?
Hello, I have a pool pump that is pluged into a heavy guage, appliance extension cord. The extension cord is plugged into an outdoor timer, which is rated to handle the output of the pool. All of the wires stay remotely dry (except during heavy rainstorms). I noticed last night that the right prong on the extension cord is black and some of the rubber at it's base is charred. Anyone know what would cause this??? By the way, this is all connected to GFI oulet that is made for outdoor use. ... (Asked by Veccster)

Please teach me about electrical cord splicing and safety??
I am not looking for an answer as to how to stop my dog from chewing the cords, that has been addressed. However, once the cords have been chewed through, can't I just cut out the chewed portion and splice the two sides together using electrical tape (i.e., take a portion of the outer coating off both sides, twist the wires together, and cover with the black tape) ?? I thought this was fine, but somebody else told me that this wasn't safe, and that sparks would occur with such a taped cord and potentially cause a ... (Asked by LadyPom)

Replacing a deep freeze power cord?
I have a deep freeze that I purchased in 97 and the power cord needs replaced. The power cord has been cut in half. So, I have purchased a new power cord and got ready to change it out, but the old power cord goes way up inside the freezer with no way to change it out. My question is, am I able to splice the new cord with the old one as long as I use wire nuts and tape up? ... (Asked by Gordy251)

A.
You can do it. But i recommend putting the splice in a junction box with a cover...If your splice ever fails and arcs out, the sparks (hopefully) will be contained in the box. Use metal 4"x4" and steel cover. 2 cable connectors. Make sure wirenuts are tight!! and tape them to the wire insulation so they don't vibrate off.....(Answered by backyard_tire_biter)
