I'm having a party, what is the best & cheapest way to sound proof our apt?
Last time the music was a bit too loud so our neighbors complained to the management people. This time we want to lower the music AND try to soundproof our apt. We see things like egg crates but what kind? The styrofoam ones or the recycleable ones? What else besides egg crates. Should we hang a blanket or sheet in front of the door, cover the bottom of the door with cloth, etc.
Please give me a series of suggestions to sound proof as much as possible for the door, windows, etc.

it would take thousands of egg crates to make a difference. hanging a heavy blanket over the doors and windows would help but look like sh*t. there is no practical way to do it I think. keep the music down, especially the lower frequencies then you can turn up the higher frequencies a little more. they tend to be absorbed. low frequencies with longer wave lengths will go right through walls and floors like they aren't even there, so no super woofer.....(Answered by Butch) |

Invisible mildew?
If my carpet got wet from a plumbing leak and then dried pretty well... then we pulled it partially up and it doesn't smell or have any visible signs of mildew (except in one spot where a crate was sitting) then do we still need to get rid of the whole thing? or just that little section? We really want to avoid anything that could make one sick because the room will later be a nursery.

Remove just the little section but have the carpet professionally cleaned and disinfected. A good disinfectant will reduce the level of mildew and the cleaning, using hot water from a truck mounted cleaner will help too....(Answered by Handy but Perplexed) |

How do I fix a hole in the carpet?
I have a puppy who is very curious, and last night as I was cooking dinner I found him eating my carpet! After I put the little stinker in his crate I cleaned the area and found that he left a 1/2 dollar coin size hole on one of the stairs. Is there a cheap way to fix this where it looks like nothing happened or do I need to hire someone to come and fix it?
Thanks.
By the way...the puppy is fine...spoiled, but fine. :)

If you have some of the original carpet just cut a plug and use some heavy duty packaging tape to make a repair. That'll never hold up for about three days.
I would just call the carpet guys and have them come out and put a new piece on the step for $50. If you don't have any extra, take a piece from a closet....(Answered by fearjar) |

How do I clean OLD MILK CRATES?
I have three (80? year old) milk crates they are in good condition but are dusty dirty and have several water marks. I would like to clean them, and apply a coat of oil polish to preserve them. I need to clean them in such a way as to preserve the black ink screen printing to keep them authentic.
Any suggestions?
I don't think they are valuable, I just want them to look better so I can use them upstairs.

Try Dawn Dishwashing detergent and a soft sponge. If it works for getting oil slick oil off birds, it should work for you. My cat fell into a pan of old oil my husband had drained out of the car. I washed her with Dawn and she was fine....(Answered by JoAnn W) |

lexan how strong is it?
My dog has a wire crate. He has destroyed two of the trays that are placed at the bottom of the crate. I tried using 1/4" plexiglass and my dog destroyed it. Will lexan work any better?

A sheet of stainless cut to fit is your best bet. I had the same problem with my "beast" and he broke the "lexan" laminate that I bought that's supposed to be bullet proof. Well, it doesn't stop a dog with a lot of free time and boredom to peel layer after layer off. Besides the cost is virtually the same. Any fabrication shop or welding shop can hook you up!
Good luck dog lover!
