Q.
How do cure a slice of wood from an old oak?
My mother just had an old Oak taken down and I got them to save me a piece of the main trunk. It's about 3 feet wide, and maybe 8 to 10 inches thick. I'd like to have it cut up into 1-2 inch thick segments to make small tables. How should I cure it so that it doesn't crack as it dries? An arborist friend said he'd heard that rubbing it daily with linseed oil for about a year would work, but that he'd never tried this himself. Any ideas? Would cutting it ... (Asked by Void)

Guess what...your friend is right. if you slice wood before it has had and chance to dry as a whole trunk it not a good start. The wood will shrink, you can't stop that. But you can try and replace moisture in it. Treating with Linseed oil on a regular basis over time may reduce the probability of the timber splitting while seasoning (slowing the drying process) the segments. logs usually take up to 12 months of seasoning, cut timber hastens the moisture loss. We've made quite a few tables out of sliced truck and yes some ...(Answered by jacthedog)

No idea where you are---your wood is drying out too quick, you need to put like a moist blanket around it or put it in a dry humid spot and it could take a year to completely cure. I cured red oak in NC without cracking it by keeping it in a damp basment for a year....(Answered by lilabner)

Why are you unwilling to talk with someone. I've been there - and I never wanted to burden anyone else. I was also afraid people would look down on me. Thing is, people felt honored that I thought enough about them that I would talk to them about something so important. The people I talked to never looked down on me or held it against me either. I don't know if I would be here without their help....(Answered by Travis)

curing cement with a sprinkler?
My daughter has had a 1200 sq ft pad poured. She was told to "keep it wet". Due to her needing to leave town for two days, she has asked me to go to her house and use a sprinkler and water it 3 times per day setting the timer for 120 min each time. just keep it damp. it water is left to set on top the the cement you could rune it. keeping it damp will force the concrete to dry from the inside out and thus make it harder. i would say that you need do this for about two days, you may need to adjust this depending on how hot it is in your area. Best to get a Pro take a look. I would ask at your local Home Dept....(Answered by chris s)

How can I cure foul odors from closet painted (and now dried) with spoiled latex paint?

You are going to have to put a sealer on it, covering ceiling, woodwork and walls, and then repaint it completely, ceiling, walls, and any woodwork. Dulux, which encompasses several excellent paint brands, has a sealer for that purpose. I would tell you to get a flat oil based sealer, but the store would argue with me. I am an old paint man. The best sealer in my estimation is shellac which you would probably have to get at ACE hardware. The problem with painting a closet with shellac is that the room is small, the fumes ...(Answered by Bill P)
