Q.
What are Your Favorite Ways of Being Thrifty or Frugal?
For example, I make my own cleansers and laundry detergent, cook mostly from scratch, buy staple foods in bulk, etc. Ideas to share? Thanks. Good answer, Dogz! For most around the house cleaning, I use Baking Soda and vinegar. Vinegar kills anything nasty without poisoning my family. My laundry detergent is something I tweaked over the past 5 years. Buy a box of Borax (about 35-40 oz., in the laundry aisle) 16 oz box of baking soda Mix in an old clean milk jug w/ 1t Essential oil. Shake before using. Use 3 T. per load of laundry. It works best in warm water, which ... (Asked by Croa)

I dont buy name brand products, except for a few that are exceptional. I like to learn how to fix things around the house myself instead of hiring someone-and i get the satisfaction too. Then public library is a great resource so i dont usually buy books, movies, or magazines as they are free at the library. Many items, fashion, luxuries are unnecessary and i always ask if myself if something is a "want" or a "need". I know that i dont have to posess an item to enjoy or appreciate it-even if i can afford it. I ...(Answered by red_rose_rancher)

Q.
What's wrong with my walls?
Here's the deal. I moved into a 25 year old condo 2 years ago. When I started to paint the walls, I ran into problems. I originally washed the walls down (mild detergent), let dry for a week (I'm doing this on weekends, no rush), and put on 1 coat of latex primer. The next weekend, I cut in with the paint (no problems), but as I began to roll the paint on, the coat of primer started peeling off. I was able to peel the entire coat of primer off with my hands, just like peeling skin after a ... (Asked by dark_knight_1735)

My guess would be that at some point in the past, while dusting, a previous owner accidentally sprayed furniture polish on the wall and said "wow, that looks great" and then did all the walls. You are using the right approach with the oil primer....(Answered by Irish Trout Bum)

go to the library and get some books on soap making. all it takes is some lard, some lye, two stainless steel pots and some stainless spoons and thermometers. lye is getting hard to find now, thanks to the meth makers. the only source i know of is a product called "thrift" drain opener and you can get it at REAL plumbing stores (not lowes/home depot)...(Answered by hillbilly named Possum)

Q.
How to remove stain from cloth when ordinary detergent is not powerful enough?
I have a favorite T-shirt that spotted by another cloth's color, and right now, no detergent can clean it at all. It's a faint yellow stain on a white material. I tried to search for another cloth of same type and colour, but I can't find its match. How can I clean it by myself using a more practical method, while not damaged the cloth itself? (if you can, please don't mention something like: "by using this X-brand detergent or this Y-brand detergent" because it's country dependant - I prefer answers that use more natural method, maybe by using lime ... A.
from experience, stains resulting by washing different colored cloths at the same time are very difficult to remove. in your case, since the cloth that was stained is white, maybe you can TRY to bleach (zonrox/xonrox is a good brand) the stained part, since bleach helps whiten cloths. (if your cloth is not white, DO NOT attempt to bleach.) you can also try washing the part that is stained in a vinegar solution (i don't know the right proportions), my mom said that she used to do that to remove food stains. No guarantees here! :D...(Answered by chocoadik)

Q.
As a deck cleaning solution, someone recommended mixing bleach, rubbing alcohol, and non-ammonia soap. Safe?
The mix proposed was 1 gallon water, 1 quart bleach, 1 pint rubbing alcohol, and 2 table spoons murphy's oil soap or other non-ammonia detergent. Is it safe to mix bleach and alcohol? I know not to mix ammonia and bleach. ... (Asked by needtoclean)

Actually it isn't a good idea to, though it is safe. Murphy's is an OIL......and rubbing alcohol removes oil...... bad idea. If you're going to clean your deck I highly recommend using a pressure washer and purchasing a cleaner specifically for it. If you can't get a pressure washer then I suggest you use plain old Dawn Dishwashing detergent (it won't kill your grass!)....(Answered by cyanne2ak)

A.
I wouldn't put diluted bleach on a carpet either. Just because it's white doesn't mean that the chlorine will not chemically react leaving it a strange color. You might try ammonia (pretty strong concentration if the carpet is that dirty) and will probably have to go over it a couple of times but it will work. Vinegar will remove odors but not stains and dirt very well. And laundry soap, well, all I can say is it's a good way to mess up a carpet cleaning machine (which is why rug doctor recommends a de-sudsing agent ...(Answered by blueyes)

Wow, thanks for an interesting hunt! I don't know how basic you want to get. The first link is REAL basic -- beef tallow and oil, etc. -- a bit much for me! The others seem a bit more realistic, and the final one has lots of links to other pages. If you google "make soap" or "make shampoo" you'll find lots of sites to help you, I'm sure. Good luck!!...(Answered by Yahzmin)
