Q.
Are there any draw backs to dumping leaves?
In my back yard I have a wooded area that I'd like to keep weeds & thorn bushes from growing in. I have been raking the leaves from my property, and dumping them in the back to prevent the brush from growing. Are there any draw backs to dumping leaves like this? ... (Asked by ani)

Leaves are great mulch and that's what you are doing when you drop them to stop bushes and weeds from growing the only draw back is fire hazard and they blow around again. To keep down the fire issue water well with a hose once a week until winter snows. To keep from blowing around the watering will help here too as the leaves when wet will stick together and not blow around or just cover with a cheap tarp and weight down with some boards anyone ask what's under the tarp just tell them its your compost pile ...(Answered by Kdid49)

My neighbor keeps dumping his yard clippings in my yard?
my neighbor has recently started doing lots of work on his yard, like removing trees and such. we live directly across the street from them, and our front yard has a few trees that conceal anything that may have been dumped back there. me and my sister have recently started clearing out our front yard because it's become overgrown. we found a lot of pine tree clippings in the surrounding trees and the ground. he's also broken a few trees in the process. we know that he's been doing it because we've seen him, but we don't know what we ... It's called trespassing! Call the cops...they will tell him to stay off your property. If it continues after that...you should probably make a record of his activity...get it on film, then call the cops again or take him to court! Good luck!...(Answered by kenaikitty)

A.
Where I'm from they're called inert landfills. Our municipal dumps that take trees, limbs and yard debris are called inert. The other dump for household trash, construction debris, recyclables is a "sanitary landfill". However, we have a private landfill that takes anything that's not putrible (stink, rot, attract flies, etc.), and they say it's an inert landfill. So, who knows. Hope this helps....(Answered by sthorpe45)

Start looking in the newspaper or try some construction sites where they are clearing the land. There are many people looking for "Clean Fill". If you drive in a location that is more rural, a lot of land owners look for clean fill to fill low levels in their property and they will post signs in their yard. Most people will take it for free because they need it but some construction sites will charge you for taking your soil. It's like they are doing YOU the favor though they may need it anyway. Good Luck!!!...(Answered by Valkyrie)

A.
Apparently, soil dumping refers to getting rid of contaminated soil from one place by dumping it somewhere else. In the case of Honolulu, it's soil contaminated with lead. The plan is to put this soil in a landfill, using it to cover the layers of compacted waste. They were going to have to cover waste with soil anyway, so they are reasoning that they might as well use soil that they're trying to get rid of....(Answered by ecolink)
