Can I freeze fresh orange tomatoes?
We decided to try to grow a vegetable garden this year and we have done very well in the tomato department. I don't want to only enjoy a week's worth of homegrown tomatoes and then have to start buying them from the store again, and I don't want to can them either. So can I freeze them whole?

Yes, you sure can freeze them. Cut them up in small portions or just freeze the smaller ones whole.
They're good for soups & stews, veggie dishes.\
You can also slice up the fresh green ones, dip in egg mixture & flour & sautee until slightly brown. Or sautee them without the breading. They're delicious that way....(Answered by Bluealt) |

Will a hard freeze kill my hostas?
We are having freezing tempatures and was wondering if it will kill my hostas that are already coming up. They did freeze along with everything else that has already come up. Can anyone give me some pointers on what to do for them?

if the temps get way down, it will freeze the leaves. however the roots will continue to support the plant throughout the growing season and your hostas will be fine. they may be compromised a little from a size standpoint, but you can minimize this by mulching over for the cold snap or covering them over with towels or blankets. just make sure you don't use something like a plastic bag as the freezing temps will go right through.....(Answered by shelley_jacqueline) |

Will newly planted grapes survive a freeze and come back after the new leaves have died?
We planted young grape plants purchased from Sams Club around 3 weeks ago. We just had a freeze and the leaves have died and fallen off. Does this mean the plant is dead? If not how long would we have to wait to see if they will come back and grow again? If they are dead where can we go to get new ones? We live in Colorado Springs and are hoping there won't be another freeze this spring. Should we add any type of fertilizer-and if so when and how much?

They are probably ok. If you have a deciduous tree or vine that you question if it is still alive, scratch a small spot on the bark towards the end of a smaller stem and see if there is a green layer directly underneath. If not then work back down the branch until you find some green. This is the cambium. If it is green, you have a live plant or branch. It will probably take a few weeks, maybe quicker, for it to bud out again, but it should be fine.

Actually, Roundup will freeze. Problem is Glyphosate, the main active ingredient, becomes less effective if it ever freezes. Round-up is foliage activated, so a good dousing should do it. Check your concentrations on the bottle. Round-up sold at different locations has different concentrations of Glyphosate. Or like someone else recommended...use gas....(Answered by gacuteone) |
