Q.
stained glass question...?
My windows in the front of the house have a half circular window on top. There are 3 of these in the front.Do you think it would be a wise choice to install stained glass in these areas or would it look too much like a cathedral. We have several stained glass lamps and fire place covers, but it is all inside.Would it look nice or unclassy. ... I think it would look fabulous from the inside during the day and from the outside at night. It's a very upscale expensive look so I don't think you would be sorry. Obviously you like stained glass anyway and I do too. I'm a retired realtor and the only stained glass I ever saw someone object to was a window with a scene of a lighthouse in a part of the country that has very little water and no lighthouses. I'm sure the seller has a soft spot in his heart of lighthouses but it was not a selling point. ...(Answered by moonrose777)

Q.
Is stained glass coated with something? Example: Tiffany Style Lamp?
I have noticed when I tap on stained glass that has been soldered together that it "sounds" like plastic. I was wondering why. Is it coated? Is it because the pieces are so small and soldered together? Or, is most "stained glass" today actually plastic? Would love to hear from someone that makes and/or sells Tiffany style lamps or Stained glass windows. It is definitely soldered together. I have painted glass as well so I know what you are talking about, and this is different. There is a chance that the pieces I have experience with ... (Asked by Bonnie ♥)

China is making it's own glass now, but it is poor quality and has no sheen. The glass can be hard to cut and sometimes it can just be "crumbled" to make the shape. When the lamp is finished they coat the outside with an oil that gives it the sheen, but the glass sounds like plastic when you tap on it....(Answered by lyndell v)

Q.
Saving a picture- stuck to glass.?
I put my son's class picture in a frame. It got knocked down and the glass broke. I placed it on the counter, thinking I'd get new glass the next day for it. However, due to circumstances, it sat on the counter for three days. Well, it appears someone placed a drink on the glass. Moisture from the sides dripped onto th glass....and into the crack. Now in the center of the picture, the pieces of glass are stuck. When I take them off, it's going to ruin the picture. Any ideas? ... (Asked by imjustasteph)

If the picture is on real photographic paper, immerse the glass and photo in cold water, gently agitate till photo comes free, don't try to peel it off you will ruin the photo.. Dry flat on a clean towel emulsion (picture side) side up. Handle gently by the corners. Don't blot or touch the emulsion till dry. It may have some slight buckles after drying, if you put it in a frame you will not notice them. This only works with photographic paper, not Polaroid's or anything printed off your computer....(Answered by LJAY2000)

Working with Glass Block. Waited to long to clean up mortor. Tips for cleaning?
I put a small 16"X32" glass block window in my bathroom. This is the first time I've worked with glass block and I fear that I waited to long for my final mortar clean up. It's hard as a rock now and I have quite a bit on the glass face. The sponge is just being shredded by the mortar. Is there anything I can do to clean up the mortar and get it just between the grout lines? Or will I have to rip the glass out and start over and chalk this one up to learning? Thanks DIYers! I'm finding ... (Asked by palmbaychuck)

Modern "plate glass" began to be used in residential construction in the 1940's and all but replaced the old "float glass" by the early 1960's. There is still a lot of old float glsss out there. It is worth recycling because many restoration specialists seek it out for projects in historic houses or period restorations. In fact, some neighborhood historical districts prohibit the use of plate glass and mandate the use of float glass in order to preserve the look of the neighborhood....(Answered by exbuilder)

Q.
Double glazing toughened glass rippling effect. Is this normal?
I have had brand new double glazing windows put in all over my house (UK). The downstairs front and rear dining room windows are large, and had to have toughened glass put in. I'm not happy with the way they look. The glass appears "rippled" all the way across, and distorts when you look through it. It's really noticable. I have spoken to the company about it (the work was finished yesterday), and they say it is the toughened glass, which has been heated and rolled through a roller to toughen it, which causes this effect. ...
