Q.
Yellow Jackets getting into my house?
There are Yellow Jackets getting into one room of our house (upstairs bedroom). They mostly collect inside one of the window sills and then die because they can't get out but a few actually get into the room everyday. They are almost always small and dead or dying. Over the last 3 years we have had a few nests removed from our attic and gutter areas by contractors that we're doing work in those areas. The nests appeared to be dead (although at time of removal there were a few bees flying around). Any advice on ... (Asked by mememe)

In our last house in the woods, we used to get them alot. They would get in the attic and the chimney. We would tape a plastic garbage bag across the fireplace and set off one of those can bug bombs inside it. The same for the attic and leave the home until it was safe according to the instructions on the bug bombs. We had to do it yearly, as every time we would light the fireplace for the first time, they would start buzzing around. You might could hire a professional exterminator ...(Answered by treedle)

Okay maybe this is not a hive, but they are definatley Yellow Jackets and since they are in the Crawl of My House, using gasoline is not really an option. ... (Asked by shandebar)

I use WD-40 to kill them. But to keep them away....don't know. Ultrasonic bug devices maybe? And I mark where they are during the day and kill them at night when I know they are all in the nest. You could set out poison baits using fruit or spam to lure them to the poison. I would do this on a Friday when you know the kids are not going to be at the school until Monday and set the poison in areas where the kids can't get to them. Finding below-ground nests is difficult, so ...(Answered by smarabiansrus)

Q.
How do I kill a nest of yellow jackets?
I've tried several sprays (yellow jackets, hornets, wasps) and nothing seems to work. The yellow jackets only die if I soak them. The spray isn't working on the nest -- a crack in the masonry of a raised flowerbed -- and the yellow jackets keep coming back. ... (Asked by jbrandtc)

If you can't effectively seal the crack, when you remove the nest, place something in it's place, (like a tennis ball on a short string), affixed with something like caulk or silicone glue. This creates, for them, the impression that something else is occupying the space....(Answered by KenlKoff)

Do decoy wasp nests work in keeping yellow jackets away?
I live in a far west suburb of Chicago and we get lots of yellow jackets during the summer. My husband is allergic and I'm worried my two young daughters might be also. I've heard that decoy wasp nests will keep wasp, hornets and bees away. Has anyone had luck with these? Do you have any other suggestions about how to rid a yard of yellow jackets and stinging insects? ... (Asked by shanequinox)

I've never heard of decoy nests. What does work is those wasp traps where you put in sugar water and the wasps go in and can't get out. You can also buy just the entrance and use 2 liter pop bottles....(Answered by tulip_five)

ALL good answers here... Yes leather needs air... By trial and error I found out the hard way many years ago... Nothing quite like pulling out a FUZZY, with mold, leather jacket, *cough*hack*. Protect the leather first, using any of the leather products you find in the store... and putting that moisture absorbing packet in with your stuff will be a benefit as well. I have used bees wax protectant which you apply with a blow dryer for heat. No more mold for me !! : )...(Answered by Kitty)

how to stop yellow jackets from swarming all over a hummingbird feeder?

A.
I would recommend bee guards for your feeder. They are small, plastic gridwork caps that snap over the holes in the feeder. Not all feeders are designed to accommodate them, so you need to have the kind of feeder that does. What they do is allow the hummers to poke their beaks through the grid and feed, but the yellow jackets & other bees cannot reach the holes. You can find the bee guards at most any store that sells the hummingbird feeder supplies & they are very inexpensive....(Answered by harlowtoo)

A.
Get one of the pressurized cans of hornet and wasp killer that will shoot a stream of insecticide about 20 feet. Wait until after dark, when all of the wasps have returned to the hole, then spray a lot of insecticide into the entrance of the nest. Run like h*ll. Repeat this each night until all the wasps are gone....(Answered by purrmoon)
