Q.
How is this indoor lighting effect created?
I was in a bedroom recently which had some type of lighting fixture built in- it produced a perfectly even strip of light glowing out from underneath a piece of molding. I'm wondering how this effect is achieved - is it fiber optic? The light was completely even and dimmable. ... (Asked by skifreak38)

Will a cactus live under fluorescent lighting?
I have a small cactus in a small pot on my desk at work. I am not near a window with sunlight. But, there are fluorescent lights everywhere that are always on. Q.
What is the best outdoor lighting system to protect your house from burglars and crime?
How have you set up your outdoor lighting system? Including the garage lights and the lights you might have in your flower beds which "spotlight" your house. Any tips would be helpful as there is an increase in burglaries and car thefts in my area (our cars have been broken into 2x in our driveway). Please HELP! P.S. We have car alarms but the thieves are pretty clever here, no alarms ever go off when cars are broken into. I don't know how they do it, our cars are always locked & alarms off. P.S. We have car alarms but the thieves ... (Asked by ultra _ girl)

I have a motion activated light by my back garage door. I installed lights on top of my patio cover that I can turn on if someone is on the hillside above my home. I have landscape lights in front, back and both sides. I use the spot lights to highlight recessed corners and the fence. I made it look like the spotlights on the fence are highlighting some decorative items I hung on it, but it is really so that burglars know they cannot get over the fence without being seen. I also keep ...(Answered by eskie lover)

Does anyone know how to remove oxidation from exterior lighting fixtures?
I installed all new low voltage exterior landscape lighting three years ago. The fixtures now have fairly noticable oxidation. I believe that they are powder coated cast aluminum. I have 20 path lights, a large five lamp pole fixture, and several floods that all have the same problem. I invested a fairly substansial amount of time and money in this lighting and I would like to find some way to remove the oxidation without having to replace all of the lights. ... (Asked by McLaren)

You can use car polish to remove the oxidation and restore the original color but to be honest, that is what Al does. If you clean it all up, in 3 years it will oxidize again. It's the exposure to ultraviolet radiation that is the culprit....(Answered by college kid)

Don't worry. There are a couple of things you can do to get the indirect lighting effect. Try one of the standing lamps with several lights on it that you can redirect. Placing one in a corner should work well. Torchiere lamps are good for this, but dusting them is a pain. Also, you can buy canister lamps cheaply at the hardware store. Place these behind tall, potted plants or items on a small table and you have instant dramatic lighting. These lamps are simply a can that you stick the bulb in. They get ...(Answered by imadriana)

Q.
Anyone know about lighting standards in apartment buildings?
I live in an apartment building which has 2 underground car parking areas. These parking areas, and the internal lobbies, are all lit day and night with the usual flourescent tubes. One of the owners here, has the bright idea of "saving us money" by turning off all the lobby lights during the day, and half of the car park lights at all times. Apart from the obvious safety issues, I'm sure that there must be legal requirements for lighting, which the builders would have followed when putting up the place. Does anyone know how I could access these guidlelines ... (Asked by Stella)

A.
There are no legal requirements for lighting. There are some code issues and insurance issues. The life safety code (NFPA) states that there must be at least one footcandle of continuous exit egress lighting. This means there has to be a minimal amount of light to see to get out of a building in an emergency. Also, many insurance companies require a similar amount of light in order to accept liability in a claim where lighting is involved....(Answered by prime8)

What are the main advantages and disadvantages of different lighting for reading?
was wondering if there's any particular lighting that is better for illumination, eye strain, headaches, color of light, etc. Do some lighting sources flicker, causing eye strain? I'm wondering about incandescent, compact fluorescent, and LEDs, natural light, and candlelight. Seems natural light would be the best... however I do sometimes find it difficult to read outside on a really bright day, so maybe not. I also see an advertisement for Tensor brand full spectrum light, but I don't know what kind of bulb that has. ... (Asked by Gene K)

A.
The best light source is one with a high CRI (color rendition index) value. A high CRI value produces the high contrast needed for task situations such as reading. Fluorescents typically have a much higher CRI than incandescents. LED's, which have a high CRI, are also being developed for task lighting. Avoid glare, such as being in direct view of a light source or light bulb when reading. If you are using light from the window to read, then read with your back to the window....(Answered by prime8)

A.
By economic, do you mean "short-term" as in small outlay at the beginning, or over time having it cost you less in diminished energy costs...? There are LED lights available that cost more up-front, but only consume minimal wattage and have extremely long timetimes to them, and they are water-resistant. Perhaps the flex-strip would work best for you...? Depends on whether you want security lighting, or just ambient...check out the link below....(Answered by Elliegta)
