What should my yard maintenance priorities be?
We have a medium-small yard with lots of weeds & dead areas, a huge amount of overgrown bushes, and some semi-planted flower beds. We have not much time for yard maintenance and no budget for hiring anyone. What would be the best use of our time to make the best improvement in appearance?

First I would trim the overgrown bushes. This is a little work, but makes a huge improvement. Than, I would treat the lawn with a do-it-your self weed and feed treatment that just attaches to the garden hose and a way you go, following the instructions provided of course. This can be purchased at Wal mart, Canadian Tire, Rona, etc. If lawn requires seeding to repair dead patches, than seed where needed and water consistently, till healthy growth appears. These three things should get you started and will surely make a huge difference in the appearance of your yard.

You have to check in your area but peonies are beautiful plants that are almost indistructable, they are good spaced apart for a beautiful border between you an neighbours. They grow like small bushes with several big flowers on each, can be a dozen plus. Above an average persons knee and a little higher. They last a lifetime. They should be pruned down some in winter but no matter what you do to them they last. People have even run over them with lawn mowers and they survived and grew up the next year. ...(Answered by cathy) |

Bamboo, thats what I have as a privacy fence. But you better check it out on the internet first to see if you really want it or any other tall plants. Bamboo is extremely
fast growing and no maintenance. Cluster plants are better
than the runners....(Answered by dna) |

"Walk-On-Me" Plant, is a creeping Thyme that grows only 3" tall, (Also called Mother of Thyme). It is a decorative, dense-growing ground cover, and when you walk on it the whole area will is filled with the aromatic smell of fresh thyme. It grows well in partial

I vote to plant big pots with serveral plants in each one....ex. plant a grass palm in the middle at the back, include cannas on either side, space some ivy-leaved geraniums or regular geraniums, plant in the same pot maybe some white or lime green tobacco plants mixed with salvias......This can go on and on.......if you do it this way, you can always change out the annuals and leave all the perennials showing some color year around...don't know what climate and how cold, etc. you live in....(Answered by Cassie) |
