Q.
Mildew smell?
I keep smelling mildew in my mom's older home, near the floor in various rooms. What might that mean - should I have something checked out? ... (Asked by doggiemom)

You already know that it means there's a moisture problem. I'd have an inspector come out (the kind who do inspections before a real estate sale...they don't have any products to sell you) and see if the source can be located. If it's a matter of soil too close to the sill outside, then that's an easy fix. If it's a crack in your foundation or a rotted sill, then you have your job cut out for you. If it's a mold problem, then obviously you need to address it before anyone's health is jeopardized. The last one I hired ...(Answered by GenevievesMom)

Q.
Mildew on ceilings of exterior walls.....?
We live in a mid-terrace house & keep getting mildew on the ceilings in all the rooms upstairs of our house, against the walls that are the exterior walls of the house. Even after cleaning with the appropriate solution it returns very quickly. All the houses in my area are built in the same way & every1 I have spoken to gets the same problem. One thing the surveyor picked up on when we bought the house was that it had a 'floating roof' so I am guessing this has something to do with the problem? A neighbour was told ... Firstly I agree with all the answers you have recieved thus far, ventilation or lack of it is usually the problem with mildew. I believe you have a damp problem. If you can invisage warm air from your rooms being conducted through the celing board and being met by the cold air within the roofspace, it causes condensation, and if there is a vapour barrier (polythene) present there is nowhere for the moisture to escape....(Answered by Stan P)

Q.
Is it mildew?
For the last few days my hall by the bathroom has been smelling like a mixture of iron and the outdoors and it very strong during the morning and less strong as the day goes on. I can see some slight water mark on the other side of the wall in the kitchen (no smell or softness found there) but I cannot figure out if the smell is coming from outside and somehow getting into my house (no windows there) or if it's mildew. How can I tell? Is there a specific type of mildew that smells ... (Asked by Amore <thea_babee>)

There is a bacteria that feeds off of iron and releases a foul-smelling gas that meets the conditions you described. This bacteria is found at the site of stagnant water. I suspect you have a long-term plumbing leak inside the wall. http://www.ngwa.org/pdf/ironbacteriaclipcopy.pdf#search='gallionella%20iron%20bacteria' I would open up a section of the drywall or plaster in the suspect area to have a look. It may be that you have to call a plumber in for a leak repair, or it may turn out to be a foundation leak. In any event, you'll have to take a look to determine the problem prior ...(Answered by Elwood Blues)

The best way to remove mold or mildew is to scrape off the host's surface and soak it with a concentrate of bleach. Mold and mildew are organisms that feed on moisture and darkness. Poor air circulation is the major cause. Moisture stays if there's no air to dry it out, therefore the situation becomes perfect for mold growth. Make sure you keep both shower doors in the middle after use and leave the bath door open for good air circulation. Clean your bathroom regularly. good luck!...(Answered by BOBBY)

You can get "silica gel" at the craft store. It will absorb the moisture, or you can get a "dry out" container in the household cleaner section at the grocery store. Those little packets that come in packing for things you buy that say "do not eat" is silica gel..............I put those inside my clocks to keep the moisture out....(Answered by needtoknow)

Q.
How do I remove mildew from a banner/sign?
I have a lighted box sign with a heavy duty banner type front. The banner is stretched over the box. The sign is white. The backside is covered in mildew so that if I turn the sign on, you can see the dirt through the sign. I can get up on a ladder to clean it. I would imagine scrubbing it with a brush wouldn't hurt. Is there anything that I can spray that will remove the mildew or make it come off when I scrub? It is made out of a material ... (Asked by The Lady Amalthea)

I would use DampRid's Mildew & Mold Remover and Protector for fabrics. I won't damage the fabric or the writing on the sign, won't fade any colors or yellow the white like bleach based products and will leave a protective coating on the material that will resist the future growth of mold and mildew. You can find it only at Lowes in the cleaning aisle. I use it on my gazebo awnings and my patio furniture cushions with much success....(Answered by eskie lover)

Invisible mildew?
If my carpet got wet from a plumbing leak and then dried pretty well... then we pulled it partially up and it doesn't smell or have any visible signs of mildew (except in one spot where a crate was sitting) then do we still need to get rid of the whole thing? or just that little section? We really want to avoid anything that could make one sick because the room will later be a nursery. ... (Asked by QuiltyGirl)

Remove just the little section but have the carpet professionally cleaned and disinfected. A good disinfectant will reduce the level of mildew and the cleaning, using hot water from a truck mounted cleaner will help too....(Answered by Handy but Perplexed)

mold/mildew problem in closet likely resulted from some leaks, what to do?
I want to use one of my rooms as bedroom but a while ago there was some very small amount mold/mildew stains from a leak in the wall of the closet(during winter snow storm and water was squrting in) . Since it was bleached and dried back then and there's no leak right now, my landlord doesn't want to rip it open to see what caused the leak and mildew. I am concerned that when we have some snow in a month or two, the leak will come back and not only my clothes will be ... (Asked by tm99)

As far as any health concerns, it depends on what color the mold/mildew was and what direction the wall faces (e.g. North, South, East, or West). From your description the mold/mildew was "very small." This indicates that the leak was likely minor. If the leak was fixed and the stain is no longer there due to the bleach then it is likely not a problem. The only concern that you should have is if the wall faces the south or east and/or the mold was black. A south or eastward facing wall is exposed to less sun and tends to ...(Answered by steinmancloud9)
