How can I make my Cattelya Orchid bloom?
I have 2 Cattelya Orchids- one for 3 years and one for 2 years now. I had them in Florida inside with a bright filtered light window and gave them orchid grow fertilizer about every week and a half-2wks. They've grown big (trippled in size actually) and seem to do well in orchid bark mix with spagnum moss around the top surface. I've moved to Indiana 2-3 months ago and they again have a perfect window and seem to be doing just fine. Good sturdy, green leaves, and I let them dry out between waterings and then drench them ... There is an orchid association in Maine that you can talk to. And they have monthly meetings where the growers bring a plant to put on the "show" table<<<so you could see some flowers there:

Orchid information....?
Is is true when you spray an orchid, the leaves should not be wet. If so, why.
Can I safely pinch back the old flowers for new growth or should they fall off on their own.
I'm actually having success with this orchid and would appreciate any/all advice from experienced growers, not just reference on the net nor in my book.
Thanks.

You don't want the leaves wet when in full bright sunlight, it can burn the leaves.. And its best not to have the leaves wet at night because of mold. But, if you are having success no need to change. You can pinch off the flower stalkany time. Some people have had a second stalk come up after pinching of the stem just before the flower drops....(Answered by rlbendele1) |

Orchid leaves turning yellow and falling off!!!!! HELP?
Im really worried about my new orchids. Its my first time having them. I ordered two of them off of ebay, which Im starting to think was a mistake.
Before he shipped them, he put the two orchids through some kind of drying out process for a week so they would not rot during shipping. They arrived bare root and pretty dry. I got them a little over a week ago.
Now the spike on one of the plants looks like they teeny buds growing on it are starting to dry up. On the same plant, I have lost 4 bottom leaves ... (Asked by Gia E) |

Orchids don't like cold, most will die if frozen. You plants may have died durring shipment. Also you are giving way toooo much water. It the cool winter months water every 2 weeks. In the wild orchids may go for 3 to 6 weeks without water in the winter and then get 2 to 4 inches of water every day in the summer. This extreme change seems to triger the blooming. It will be hard to keep them. Good luck....(Answered by rlbendele1) |

Welcome to the club. I have five orchids myself but I got the moth orchids (Phal.) becuase they are the most tolerant when it comes to home environment. The first time, I did what you did. I watered the plants right away. My mistake was I used a cold tap water and I lost all the flowers but the main plant is still ok. When I got the next bunch I tried the advised of the book about orchids that I read, to use a luke warm water to avoid shocking the plants. It works, I saved most of the ...(Answered by egan) |

Orchid Basic Care?
I have purchased many orchids plants and killed them. After more than 3 dozens or so (I lost count) in 5 years, I finally was able to get 2 of my orchids still alive, it's been more than 6 months. One is oncidium, the other is dendrobium. I've been placing them in the bathroom window above the shower after the blooms fell. The oncidium has spiked again (yipee). The dendrobium looks okay, but I cut off the flower stems after the blooms fell months ago. Is this okay? I'm also purchasing several other orchids (1 vanda, 1 phal, 1 cymbidium ... Each type has its own special needs, but there are a number of general rules for orchids. Usually potted orchids are placed on a pebble tray. Place this tray on a windowsill which is close to a heater. Protect the plant from strong direct sunlight. Houseplant orchids cannot tolerate hot, stuffy conditions so good ventilation is required even in winter. The plant can be taken outdoors on warm, sunny days. Indoors avoid cold draughts. Feed during the summer months.Orchids like to be pot-bound, but after a few years repotting is necessary. Use a special orchid soil mix. Keep the soil ...(Answered by hildegard r) |
