Q.
How do I get my potted Orchid to bloom again?
I purchased an orchid about 4 months ago. I beleive it is a Phaleonopsis orchid. It lives in a pot in my apartment. It lost all it's blooms about 2 months ago. Will it bloom again? How long will it take? Do I need to trim the stem that the old flowers were on, or will it bloom again on the old stem? Just want some more basic info! ... (Asked by ShanShan)

Yes, it will bloom again. here is what to do and what to expect. First, the stalk may turn brown, and then to straw, this is fine, but avoid the urge to clip it until it is fully withered. Continue to water the orchid, but make sure it is potted loosely in wood chips with drainage. In fact, now is the perfect time to re-pot it to a slightly bigger pot with wood chips and bark. then water it lightly every 7-10 days. Let it get some sunlight, but not too much. Eventually ...(Answered by Bubba the Red)

Q.
What is the proper way to care for an orchid?
I have Phalaenopsis or Moon Orchid. My hubby gave it to me for mothers day. I really love it but I don't have much of a green thumb. It has a card that shows how to care for it, but it doesn't say if it is safe to put outside sometimes. If anyone has a better explination of how to care for them please let me know. I see some spots of the flower are turning orange from what used to be a fuscia/purple color. ... (Asked by twinkle toes)

Don't put the orchid in full sunlight, but can go outside to freshen up when it's really warm. They like a warm and humid atmosphere, so ok to put outside in dappled shade when you water it. Snails and slugs will head straight for it, so keep out of reach. Better off inside in bright light. Keep it warm at all times like you would for African Violets. Don't let water get into base of leaves during cold weather as they can rot. Because they grow on trees naturally, pot them into pine bark, charcoal chunks, never soil, so air can ...(Answered by tartan_12003)

How do I fix my ailing orchid?
I have an orchid that we received as a wedding present that is now turning yellow and loosing its leaves. We also don't have the best lighting in our house. Is there any hope for it? ... (Asked by lil)

You should buy some new soil for it, you can buy it ready made in most garden centers. Then carefully take it out of the post, hopefully it is dry, the carefully trim away any of the dead or dried roots. Try and remove as much of the soil as possible from the rooting system before replanting. If the roots are still a little wider than the pot got to the next size up. There are some very pretty Orchid pots out there now days, they actually have holes in the sides which will help with keeping the orchid in-between ...(Answered by vissenbier)

Q.
How do I take care of an orchid when it's drooping?
My roommate got an orchid recently, and she's been looking up information on how to take care of it. It's supposed to get sunlight, but not direct sunlight, and it's supposed to get sprayed once every morning and watered every day. But one of the leaves is turning yellow [that means that it's getting too much light right?] and the flowers are drooping and the buds are drooping and starting to fall off. What can we do and what should we do? ... (Asked by musicrazy)

Orchids are relatively easy to grown. Most problems come from not enough humidity..or the wrong soil. Humidity in their native habitats generall range in the 80-95% range. Humidity in the average unhumidified home typically ranges 20% or less in winter. Orchids thrive in high humidity. The simplest way to augment the humidity is with a plant tray filled with gravel. You set the orchid on the gravel and fill the tray with water just up to the surface of the gravel. Orchids like moist roots ...not wet roots. The tray should ...(Answered by Kenneth C)

Place your "Jewel Orchid" in bright filtered light. Avoid placing your plant in an area with cold drafts or to near a cold window. Your "Jewel Orchid" should produce 3 to 5 flower spikes once a year between November and January. Check for watering weekly allowing the surface of the soil to dry. Feed bi-monthly with Orchid Food. Stem cuttings can be rooted in a container of water or vermiculite....(Answered by Odessa R)

A specific answer is hard to provide without knowing exactly what type of orchid you had. I could assume that it is a Phalaenopsis species, but it could be a Columnaria, Epidendron, Encyclia, or something from the Cattleya alliance, all of which tend to be sold "over the counter" (meaning in a wide variety of stores, with little info to go with it). Each type requires specific and differing treatment, light conditions, temperature regimes, and watering and fertilization frequencies. Essentially, if you can provide your orchid with growing conditions similar to its "native" conditions, you will have ...(Answered by Jimmy J)
