Q.
How to unblock a rainwater soak away.?
I usually have rainwater overflowing from the down drain pipe, where it meets the drain to the buried soakaway about 20 feet away .This only happens on a heavy downpour and pours over the concrete footpath on to the garden. The concrete cover that seals the pipe to the drain has broke up and been missing for years and therefore does not stop leaves etc from entering and I have tried a small power washer down it to no avail.I do not know if it is just silted up or blocked.Any tips to avoid major expense of digging the garden up ... Providing you can get access to the pipe you need a high pressure jet from a specialist contractor. (eg Dynarod) The head has jets which propel the head forward and when the head is pulled back with the high pressure water running any debris is flushed back. The contractor will bring a tanker water supply as the domestic supply is insufficient...(Answered by daddybear)

Q.
Tile/slate roof leaking rainwater into loft space.?
I've identified the leaks from the inside of the roof, and while my builder (working on the painting of the house) had a look at the roof from the outside he couldn't notice any evidence of broken or slip tiles and has suggested that foam be used on the inside of the roof to rectify the problem. My question is this: should we foam the inside to stop the leaks getting through or re-felt and tile from the outside and only that section of the roof? Thanks! ... (Asked by zeb k)

Use 3 inch or four inch drainpipe, not flexible, and fill trench with rock or lava that is larger than the holes in the pipe. It'll work just fine. If you like, you can put a clean out at the high end so any debris that does get in can be flushed out....(Answered by cat nurd)

Paint for door that repels rainwater?
I have a painted wooden door that is difficult to keep rainwater from hitting it when it rains. This water is, over time, ruining the door..... I want to paint it, then will apply Thompson's Water Seal. Is there a specific type of paint (or primer) for a 20 + year old wooden door that would help repel the rainwater? any suggestions? ... Rain hitting your door may not be the cause of your problem. Exterior paints are waterproof when properly applied and thoroughly dried. If the damage is located along the bottom of the door, check to see if the bottom edge of the door is painted. If not, remove the door from its hinges and prime and paint the edge. Raw-wood edges can absorb water and lift the paint above. If the damage you talk about is not limited to the bottom, it is possible that the door was not properly painted sometime in the past. ...(Answered by mainlandd)

The surrounding yard needs to be sloped away from the house. Downspouts should not be routed into the drain tile at the base of your foundation, they should discharge into their own drain tile system or to the surface that is sloping away from the house. If your foundation drain tile does not tun into a sump pump well, make sure it runs to daylight. It is not unusual for the end of the drain to become plugged with debris. Chances are good that your homeowners will not pay off for the seepage that you describe. They ...(Answered by exbuilder)

Q.
Whats the best way to drain standing rainwater out of my backyard without re-grading?
I bought a new house recently and when it rains there is water left standing in my back and side yards and it takes a day or two to drain out. All my sod is brand new and its getting ruined. Would burying a plastic drain conduit (with perforations on top) work to help drain some of the excess water out? The water seems to be collecting at a low point in the yard and turning the area around it into mud, which my dog is beginning to discover on her bathroom breaks. The rest of my yard ... You can install a drywell. At the lowest point, dig a hole about 4'x5'x3'. Line the bottom and sides with permeable drain cloth. Fill with 1" gravel. About 1' below the top, install a plastic pipe, and run this to any convenient drainage area. Add more gravel to bring it almost to the surface. Cover with permeable drain cloth, and cover in earth. Re sod this area, and you should be done. Alternatively, masonry supply houses stock pre-fabricated drywells, which are basically just big fiberglass tanks....(Answered by anywherebuttexas)

A.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean but if you're talking about the rain water coming off your house, one way is to bury black drain tile underground and extend it several feet away from the house. You can also connect some of the drain tile with a wye connector. Drain tile is the black drain hose that is sold at major home supply stores. If your yard is sloped, you can bury the drain tile so it drains away from the house in the low lying areas. This is especially effective if you have downspouts ...(Answered by <krisandsally@sbcglobal.net>)

Problems with Septic Tank? Always filling up with rainwater.?
Hi. Our septic tank is always filling up with rainwater ever since we got it 7 years ago. It is made from concrete and is on a slight hill so when it rains very heavily, for over a day, it fills up from the water absorbed by the ground above it and we can't use it. What can we do to sort this out? We've tried a few things: we increased the outflow pipe(made it wider), and we put a trench of stone at the top of our garden to divert some of the water away from where the tank ... Your leach field, drainage area after the septic tank isn't made proper. It is either too small or the wrong material was used to put it in. Maybe it wasn't made at all. Your tank should fill up and drain over to the leach field where it dissipates water and waste that is broken down. I would in the summer dry months, have it dug up and the proper gravel etc be put in to allow for proper drainage. Because if the septic tank is allowed to fill up and do its normal thing to eat down your waste, then ...(Answered by dontblamemeivoted)
