beetle.. The reddish purple stripe goes down its back! Does anyone know what type of bug it is? I saw it while watering my garden!
Is it harmless or harmful? is my main concern!

Well I never saw one with a reddish purple stripe! Someone told me it's a wood beetle lives amongst rotten wood. It is black mostly but with the reddish purple stripe! Brian B said it could be related to the Water Beetle.

We need more information. At the very least, tell us how many legs it has. If it has 8, it will be a spider or a tick. If it has 6 legs, it will be an insect.
Was it like a beetle? You can see pics of various beetles on wikipedia. Take a look and this might help you begin to be able to identify the bug you saw....(Answered by momtothenth) |

Does anyone know what these small, reddish-brown, ant-like bugs are?
I have these small bugs that look like miniature ants, they're at least 1/4 the size (maybe smaller) of a regular black ant and kind of reddish-brown in color. I had them in the bathroom first and now they're moving to the rest of the house. They seem to burrow behind things like the molding trim, where the seal has come loose and they are all around the sink and toilet. They're soft and don't seem to have any hard outer protective surface. Also, they started about June, completely disappeared in August and are now back ... (Asked by Carmie) |

Sounds like Pharaoh ants. Do not expose these ants to any pesticide as they will immediately split into different colonies. The only thing that works are baits. You are seeing them around the bathroom because they are seeking water. This would be a good place to put bait stations. It will take time. Avoid moving the bait once its in place. Give it time. Pharaoh ants usually live behind the walls and come out to get food.They do not bite , but are a nuisance. Good Luck!...(Answered by monte54que) |
