What is the best way to repaint and old bed and dresser set?
The paint on it was fine. The owner who smoked owned it for about 20 years. It was white. Now is yellow and reeks of cigarettes. I want to just paint over it all, but I'm afraid the nicotine will cause the paint to mess up or something. What is the easiest and best way to repaint it?

Well I just happen to be a union painter. There are two thing u can do here. You can go get a tub of STP cleaner and wash it down outside..or do what I would do..go to the paint store..get a gallon of killz.I would use oil based killz paint. (Chances are it was painted with oil based paint the first time being it's wood.) Have them shake it for you.
Supplies: china bristle paint brush 6-7 dollars
1 can of sunnyside paint thinner 3-4 dollars
1 3-4 inch whiz roller with a FOAM sleeve
1 gallon of oil based killz and some ...(Answered by Bear) |

Ok, scuff it up with some 150 or better sandpaper...
Take the scratches and "feather" them...(basically, sand them away from the scratches, so that you wont have a "rough edge" and it will show through the paint).
Do the entire cabinet, (taking the hardware off, like the handles, and anything else attached if possible to remove).
Tape anything that wont come off, so you dont paint it, with blue tape or masking tape.
Now, get some spray paint, either Krylon or some other good paint. If its going to be roughly the same color, you dont need a primer. If its not, I ...(Answered by Woodworkingmenace) |

Depending on the state you live in, you may be able to just catch the flakes in a dropcloth and dispose of in the trash. I know that Massachusetts recently relaxed the law to allow that because people were painting over loose paint to avoid all the hazardous waste issues. This caused more polution in peoples yards, so they figured it would be better to have it all in a landfill than in peoples flower beds.
Just check with the local building dept. or the environmental agency in your state....(Answered by normobrian) |

Repainting walnut-colored wood cabinets to increase resale value?
I'm thinking about repainting my walnut-colored cabinet doors and cabinets off white. My questions are:
1. Would this really increase the resale value of my home, or have I been watching too much HGTV?
2. Is it necessary to sand, or can I just prime and paint?

Yes repainting and updating will add resale value. Is there a way that you could re-glaze them instead? It is an easier process, with less time and work involved. I hate sanding and like to use a product called liquid sand, I believe Paseo makes it, and it gives tooth to a surface without having to sand. Then mix up glaze with one part latex or acylic paint, one part water and one part floetrol. I used a burgandy paint base over walnut and it gave it a cherry wood look. You just paint ...(Answered by eskie lover) |

Repainting a bookcase?
I'm considering repainting a bookcase I found left in my first grade classroom. It's been painted yellow, but the paint has chipped, is dirty, and basically doesn't look that great. An artsy friend of mine told me to use acrylic-based paint to repaint. She said I could even do it inside my classroom, as long as I put some newspaper under the bookcase. I'm wondering about how long it will take for the paint to dry, and if I should use a roller like she suggested. I have never painted anything, and will be doing ... (Asked by Not Active) |

Here's what you'll need to do on this project:
1.) Remove all loose dirt and dust from the shelf. Easiest way is usually to scuff sand the whole bookshelf with about a 100-120 grit sandpaper. (Enough to remove the sheen, if any, from the already existing coating. Dust it off with a tack rag. (You can get it at your local paint store. It's just a rag that's been treated with parafin so that it is super-sticky. It's like a dust magnet.) You need to remove all the sanding dust and grit before applying anything to ...(Answered by Bob S) |
