A.
If you have a shingle roof, you have to cut an opening about two inches or so down each side with a good skill saw, then install the ridge vent over the opening, then install shingle pieces (cut from full shingles) in an overlapping pattern over the ridge vent. If you have never did this before, I would recommend hire a contractor before you get on top of your home and begin any cutting! Also, if you go to Home-Depot or Lowe's, they probably have handouts with pictures of how to do this. I did the one ...(Answered by Hammer)

Q.
Hot attic. Should I install soffit vents or a gable fan. Atick has ridge and 2 gable vents & good insulation.
My 2nd floor is always hot in summer and cold in winter in my 1966 colonial house. My attick is well insulated and has 2 gable vents and a continuous ridge vent. I'm trying to decide on a gable fan or soffit vents. I'm leaning toward the soffit vents but was curious about: 1) Installation of soffit vents. Is this easy? What is the soffit board made of? Is this easy to cut? Is it a one person job? 2) If I install soffit vents, should I close my gable vents, as I think soffit ... (Asked by mmurphy384)

absolutely do not have a carpenter come over so you can pick his brain. The suggestion angers me because if you have no intention of hiring him you are wasting his time. this happens all too often and is really looked down upon. soffit vent won't do you any good unless the air can flow to the ridge. If insulation is impeding this then you need to install proper vent (styrofoam chutes) as well as soffit vents. Now while this is the proper way to vent a house it may not alleviate your problem. You may need a gable fan ...(Answered by filthy_jew)

They all work about the same, provided you keep two things in mind. (1) Don't buy the cheaper versions on any of them, you really will get what you pay for. (2) Be sure to install your vent correctly. Ventilation is very important and very unforgiving. Just a few more things, (you may already know), the ridge vent is 1/2 of the vent system. It is the exhaust, where attic air goes out. The other 1/2 is the intake, typically in the eaves at the soffit. Be sure there is plenty of area of ...(Answered by mrdav76)

We've got the one that goes across the entire roof. It is made of a light weight metal and seems to work well. It was easy to install. We put it on before we put on the shingles. My parents used those type of vents that spin and look like a metal basket ball on top of your roof(i believe they call them turbines) They were good too until they started to squeak and make other annoying noises. EDIT: see next answer; Nobody said don't use turbines. However, If you do, ask about maintanance and ...(Answered by pg69)

Feature Truss and Purlings?
I'm fitting 3 structural feature trusses with timber ridge purling. One end of the room is into a chimney stack and the other onto a 100mm block wall, My question is "How do I fit the Ridge purling to the chimney stack end of the room". ... (Asked by confusedman)

A.
I think what you got hear is ridge beam or board not a purlin, purlins are usually applied to top side of trusses, beams or chords to stiffen and provide sub-structure for the attachment of sidings and or roofing materials. That said, a pocket must be cut into the chimney if this is weight bearing and not asthetic only. The trusses sound more like rafter beams bearing on walls and sandwiching the ridge beam, for if they were trusses the weight would be carried at the walls not at the peak in pockets the ridge beam rest with-in. Do you ...(Answered by diSota)

Help with laying vinyl flooring?
I pulled up my old vinyl kitchen flooring (7 years old) and found that the underlayment is in great shape except that the original vinyl was just glued about 3 inches around the entire perimeter. I scraped the old glue as best as possible and it is almost perfectly level with the rest of the floor. Does it need to be perfectly smooth where it meets the unglued edge or is a slight ridge OK to keep it from showing through the new vinyl flooring? I do have floor "sizing" that I plan to use where there are any nicks ... (Asked by butkus)

You were fortunate to have armstrong perimeter glued product installed. So yes the floor would be in good enough condition. Some must do's These are important for warranty and longevity of your vinyl floor. Floor needs to be extremely smooth not to show through residental vinyl with its sheen. Use Portand cement products only they are good moisture resistors. I personally use ardex feather finsh it is very strong and will spread very nicely. Spread the ardex over all joints in the floor and where old glue was scraped. It dries in about 1/2 hour, using a fan to quicken the drying ...(Answered by stephenmwells)

A.
Toilet plungers have ridges like those so that they fit into the drain area and make a seal for suction and forcing. Don't use a sink plunger with no ridges since it will not seal down there and all your effort will just slosh the water around. Just do the same pressing down and pulling back that you are used to. Pour in some shampoo as a wetting agent to help break up the clog....(Answered by Rich Z)
