Q.

How do I measure a rolled up carpet without un-rolling? I used to work in a carpet shop and have seen some of the workers do it. I think that they used some mathematical formulae. Thank you ... (Asked by Hunkydory)

I'm not sure if there is a 100% accurate way of doing this, while you can get a rough estimate by measuring the circumference of the roll and multiplying this by the times the roll covers 360 degrees, this does not take into account that each roll of the carpet gets smaller, and the added difference due to the height of the nap of the carpet. Add to the fact everytime I've had carpet installed there is lots left over....(Answered by Securegeek)

Q.
Spraying vs. rolling paint on walls...?
Does it make much of a difference if you spray paint your walls (w/a pressure sprayer) instead of rolling the paint on? I've only seen examples of paint being rolled on walls, so I'm guessing it must, but it sure seems like it would save some time... If it does make a difference as far as paint is concerned, what about primer? Is spraying a viable shortcut with that, at least? ... (Asked by ask_away)

Spraying cost more to rent or buy the equipment, and to mask off everything and cover with plastic. Using a roller is cheaper and quicker. Things to consider, don't go cheap on materials. Buy a microfiber roller ($5), it holds more paint, and doesn't splatter. Quality paint ($21 a gallon) covers better, I like Kiltz, it's almost one coat coverage in most cases. I don't use paint pans, too messy, easy to spill paint from. Get a 5 gallon paint buckets ($5 ) and a “painters screen” ($3). I put a heavy duty trash can liner in the bucket, after ...(Answered by Nicholas F)

Q.
I accidentally flushed the toilet paper roll holder (the wooden peg that goes through the roll). How to fix?!
I accidentally flushed the wooden peg that goes through the toilet paper roll to attach it to the holder. It is a wooden peg about 5 inches long with a spring in the middle to allow the peg to compress to 3-4 inches. Now the toilet is draining slowly, and then the bowl re-fills only a very small amount. I have tried plunging and snaking the toilet but it has no effect. I'd like to avoid calling a plumber if at all possible. Any advice that you could offer as to how to fix the ... you are going to need to take the toilet apart (meaning off of the floor). You are going to need a wax ring (buy from your local hardware store). empty the water tank and turn off the water. Unscrew the bolts holding the toilet down. Pick up the toilet and turn it upside down. Pull the peg out with your hand (yeah, it's nasty in there so wear gloves) Set the wax ring over the hole on the floor Place the toilet exactly on the wax ring and make sure the toilet fits over it properly otherwise it will leak Screw bolts back on turn ...(Answered by Nathalie D)

Q.
How to install rolled insulation over existing lose fill in my attic?
Is it better to compress the insulation and pack it in between the trusses and over the existing insulation? Or is it better to lay the rolls perpendicular to the trusses? If I pack it it, it really compresses the rolls. If I lay the rolls perpendicular, this will cause a 2"-3" gap between the layers and I'm not sure if that is the proper way to do it. ... A.
In any event "do not compress" insulation, blown or loose fill insulation and on the most part all insulation, is designed to capture air and stop it's movement. The insulation value is attained through stagnant air, even closed cell insulation such as rigid foam uses the same principle. You would be best, to add to the original in the same fashion, most "Big Box" stores rent the equipment. That said, place rolled insulation perpendicular over existing in such a way as not to compress existing, by such means as to trap air between both new and old and limiting ...(Answered by diSota)
