Will shaking caused by nearby trains damage my house?
My house is about 50 feet from train tracks & trains going by cause shaking (feels similar to a small earthquake). Could this cause structural damage to the house? If so how long could it take for damage to occur? *note: the house is 30 yrs old and the house inspector found nothing wrong with the foundation. Thank you in advance for your help!

I would be concerned. It could be that the tracks were there when your house was built and the builders kept that in mind when designing your house. But I would watch for cracks on your walls and ceiling. And check your foundation at least once a year to make sure it is still sound. Repeated shaking like that will eventually compromise the structure. So keep an eye on it and don't get behind on repairs....(Answered by Io) |

Well, lets figure this, knock on a piece of wood, and you will hear the knock. Knock on a piece of asphault shingle, and it will absorb the sound.
So, you live next to an airport. Then I would "sound proof" the entire house! I would get "Rock Wool" and put it in the walls, and in the attic. Its the Best insulation value for soundproofing recommended by THIS OLD HOUSE...(And I would trust those people who did a study on this).
Now, I would get double insulated windows, so that you can stop the vibration of the roaring ...(Answered by Woodworkingmenace) |

How do I identify hail damage on shake shingle roof?
We have scuff marks on our shake shingle roof from a hail storm, is this considered hail damage? The hail was large and sustained for about 10 minutes. We have these same scuff marks on our fence and dents in our metal patio cover as well as circular cuts in our hot tub cover. The insurance company is covering the metal patio roof and hot tub cover but said the scuffing although unsightly is not considered damage.

This is hail damage! It is counter-intuitive to believe that hail will damage the fence, thin metal patio cover and hot tub cover but not the roof. Hailstorm damage is similar to hundreds of mini-ball peen hammers hitting your roof. The hail hits the shakes and causes small indentations that 1) impair the ability to rapidly shed rain water causing the roof to remain wet longer and shorten the life expectancy. 2) crush wood fibers which weaken them and make them more susceptible to premature failure thus depriving you of life expectancy.

Is a cedar shake roof more expensive to install than other roofs and why?
I am in WA state and a roofer is telling me that changing the specs from cedar hand split shakes to doing the roof in shingles will cost the same. I thought shakes were more expensive both for materials and labor.

Cedar shake roofs shouldn't be more expensive to install, they are comparable in installation time. But they are certainly more expensive to buy. I have installed both. A home with a shake roof has more street appeal and ups the value of the home. Get a second opinion, the shingles should be cheaper. but the labour costs may be slightly (SLIGHTLY) higher. If you are worried about fire, duroid(shingles) burn too. Shake roofs are not banned in Canada, I just finished the exterior on a $4 million dollar house. ALL luxury homes built here have either tile or shake ...(Answered by SAWGIRL) |

Shake, rattle and grind......?
I have 4 ceiling fans in my house. One was installed by the builder. The other 3 were installed by my "handy" hubby. Sigh. One grinds like metal ball bearings in a metal track without lubrication. Another shakes. Another rattles. Hubby has installed ceiling fans in our other house without difficulties, and he followed the same procedures here. Any suggestions?
We WD-40'd them all to death.

To determine if the bearings are bad remove the fan blades, if the noise is still present then you know.
The shaking/rattling sounds like an improper installation, or the mounting (electrical box) may not be secured properly. Keep in mind that ALL ceiling fans NEED and are required to have "fan certified" mounting box. And last but not least, the quality of the fan may be the issue, I have installed alot of ceiling fans and have never had a problem with a high quality fan, i.e. "Hunter and Harbor Breeze" are nice units....(Answered by Mikey) |
