Q.
How do I shrink a 100% cotton sweater down one size without it getting too small?
I was in the mall today shopping, and I saw a sweater I REALLY wanted. The only problem is, they didn't have one in my size. So I bought one that was 1 size too big, hoping that I'll be able to shrink it somehow. How can I shrink it in the washer and/or the dryer down one size? Will it get too small? Will the shrink be permanet? Thanks! :) ... (Asked by FluffyPanda)

Just wash in hot water and hot dry this will shrink it a size and no this can only be reversible if you use white vinegar and stretch it out by hand other than that it won't shrink again unless you want it to but only by washing it in hot water, when you wash it again when it is at your desired size you then wash it with cool or warm water and delicate or warm dry. Make sure that this sweater is what you say it is and that it is not already preshrunk. Thats it. Good Luck ...(Answered by mshonnie)

All fabrics react differently to heat and some don't react at all. If you tell me what it is made of I can tell you if it can be shrunk and at what sort of heat you should do it at... Also you have to be very careful with anything that is lined as the lining is normally synthetic and will not shrink. This could cause you to have a baggy lining in your new reduced size jacket. Not such a big issue as you can always get that altered by a tailor (or do it yourself ...(Answered by Corral B)

It will probably shrink about 1/8" but nothing noticiable in size. When they say "Pre-Shrunk" it just means that the fabric has already been processed enough that shrinking will be MINIMAL....(Answered by )

Shrink Prevention Tips?
What are some ways to help prevent my clothes from shrinking when I wash them at home? I have trouble getting pants to not shrink, even when I buy the no-shrink pants. How much does 100% cotton shrink?
I was wondering if there was an average shrink rate for 100% cotton clothing? Like a percentage of shrinkage or something. My boss just bought brand new cotton shorts and the last pair he bought shrunk to the point he couldn't wear them, now he wants to know what size he should buy so he can still wear them once they shrink. PLEASE, NO ANSWERS REGARDING HOW NOT TO SHRINK CLOTHES. We are aware of this option. Thanks! ... (Asked by bamachick250)

I'm a quilter and our rule of thumb is that you lose 5% in length and 1% in width. They don't shrink evenly from warp to weft. As a result, if you're buying clothes and they're not generously cut to compensate for the shrinkage then you need to buy them a size larger than you need. If they fit right in one size, buy the next size up so that they still fit right after shrinking, since you lose 1" per size....(Answered by Jellybean Brown)

Wow! Are you serious? Usually people are concerned about NOT shrinking cashmere. The problem with cashmere is that if you do shrink it, it mats up and loses that lovely silky feel. However, if you want to give it a try, get a sweater stretcher in the size you want it to be (they're wire forms -- something like an overgrown coat hanger with arms) and try washing the cashmere in warm water instead of the cold you would normally use. Don't put it near the dryer. That will wreck it for sure. Wrap it in a towel and ...(Answered by old lady)

The key is to wash and dry it as many times as possible. How many times have you washed something and its not till about the 30th time that it feels smaller and you swear you got bigger. Its the material it gets denser and shrinks. Also you can leave it on tp of the dryer everytime you run it for about a week. Ive done it and it works....(Answered by LAURA)

Yes, many do, especially if they contain cotton. Try washing your clothes at a temp no higher than 40 degrees. Also only tumble dry underwear!, I leave all my shirts to dry on the line. I also reshape and stretch tee shirts (pulling them longways) before leaving them to dry....(Answered by )
