No, snails and slugs are separate but similar species.
Most terrestrial snail species as well as slugs, are hermaphrodites. They have male, as well as female organs in one collective genital apparatus. This organ system not only contains sexual organs in the narrow sense of the word, but also various auxiliary organs, that have respective tasks in different periods during mating. During mating they don't act as either male or female, they actually act as both at the same time. Weird eh?

Snails and slugs have suddenly appeared in the 100s in my garden, why have they suddenly appeared?
I have been living in my house for 21 years but slugs and snails have suddenly appeared all over the place. It is very damp but it has always been damp because it seems to rain all the time in Manchester UK. I am just wondering why they have suddenly appeared? A couple of years ago the neighbours planted a plant that grows over the fence and think they might be attracted and coming from there??? Is the best way to get rid of them salt? I have been using salt but it works for ... (Asked by jammy.greeny@talk21.com) |

Get some slug and snail bait. The kind I use comes in little pellets. Throw
it around where they congregate. You're supposed to wet the pellets a little bit after that to soften them up. The beer idea works great also but that's more
of a novelty thing because you have way too many slugs and snails for that -
you'd need to have bowls all over the place to do an effective job. By the time
you spend the money on the beer and bowls + your time, it's better to buy
the bait....(Answered by wallyinsa) |

Slugs are attracted to the odors given off by the yeast fermentation process. The most popular bait has been beer. However, not all beers are created equal. In 1987, a study at Colorado State University Entomology Professor Whitney found that Kingsbury Malt®, Michelob®, and Budweiser® attracted slugs far better than other brands. Can’t sacrifice the beer? Try a mixture of 1 tablespoon (T) yeast, 1 T flour, 1 T sugar, and 1 cup water. The beer will need to be replaced at least once a week or more as it looses its potency or becomes diluted by rain.

Snails and slug problems?
Slugs and snails are eating our plants, as we want to grow veg we do not want to use anything poisonous or anything that could harm animals that eat them. Is there any natural remedies that you know of.
It seems like all your gardners out there are lovely! Thanks for the tips although I do enjoy drinking beer and I am going to feel annoyed that the slugs get beer instead of my veg!
Sorry my question meant I don't want to harm animals, ie cats, dogs etc not insects.

DO NOT USE SALT! Salt will damage your soil and your plants. When my son was 7 he decided to "help" me get rid of slugs and snails. He spread salt all over the garden. I used a shop vac to get up as much as I could (What did the neighbors think?) but I still lost several plants.
As mentioned beer traps will work. Clean out all mulch, leaves and rocks as this is where the little leaf munchers live. Crushed egg shells and diatoms earth sprinkled over the ground will cut the little beasts as the glide over them. ...(Answered by ) |

My yard is filled with odd looking snails with long, skinny shells. My neighbor says I am lucky.?
My neighbor has asked if he can collect some of these snails to put in his garden. Now I have several neighbors also asking for snails from my yard. They call them killer snails & they attact & kill the bad snails & slugs that eat their plants. I have so many I'm glad to see them go. Are all my neighbors nuts? I never heard of killer snails. But unlike my neighbors, my yard is free from the regular brown snails and I haven't seen a slug in months. Can anyone tell ... (Asked by overalydead_polly) |

PREDACEOUS SNAIL, Rumina decollata. The DECOLLATE SNAIL, Re: Killer Snail is a non toxic, biological control of the brown snail and slugs found in most warmer area yards and gardens. Smaller then it's favor ate food, the brown garden snail and with a different look, a long, thin brown shell, chows down on the eggs of other molluse species. (it does NOT attact & kill full grown snails. You still must help the killers get a foot in your garden by hand picking all the adults you can find) Don't use snail baits, they ...(Answered by Garden Doc MG) |

Snails, the bane of my existance....?
I have pellets, but it rains here often in the tropics, and every few days afterwards, there are more and more snails, I think I'll never rid myself of these critters, and simply don't have the time to remove 40+ every three to four days. I can find no way that they are getting here, but they do. It's those big ones with the brown stripes, we live on the coast.
They eat anything I try and grow that wasn't here already, forget about seeds.
Any suggestions?
