How do I uninstall a water softener?
I am buying a new home, an can not afford to replace right away, and we are switching to city water next month anyway. My tank is cracked, and there is red sand like stuff all around the base of the system.

Normally all you have to do close the shut off valves that lead in and out of it, cut both the copper piping which leads into the softener and the one which leads out and cap the cut pipes off. Then open the by pass valve which is presently closed. Now all of the taps in the house will be serviced with salt untreated water.
Don't cut the copper pipes too close to the shut off valves. Leave a small length for a reinstallation with adapter sleeves at a later date....(Answered by ½«gumwrapper) |

Any suggestions for buying a water softener for our house?
We are on a continuous feed well. We have 4 kids and 2 adults. Kids are 15 & 16 yr old girls and 8 yr girl and 3 yr old boy. Our well pump is 3/4 HP and we can run all three showers in the house at the same time and no dip in water pressure is noticed. (Not that we EVER run all 3 at once). Any suggestions on DO IT YOURSELF or have it done. Size of units. Any and all comments/suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Go to Google and you will find lots of sites that will lead you through the buying and installation processes. If you can do some basic plumbing you should be able to do it yourself. We have well water and the softener has made a tremendous difference in washing, mineral deposit build-up and performance of the hot water heater. The unit itself will probably not cost much more than a few hundred dollars. Expenses will include the cost of salt and extra electricity and water when the unit regenerates.
Do not fall for any pitch that promises to soften your water ...(Answered by indyacom) |
