When installing a stone patio, do you have to put anything else down prior to the stones other than sand?
I was going to dig down 4 or 5 inches then fill with sand then start laying the stones. Is there anything else I really need to do? ... (Asked by Chris)

If it is a really wet area you may want to add 5 or 6 inches of rock under your sand. this will help for wet areas that need excess draining. other than the weed mat that was suggested to prevent weeds from growing your good to go!...(Answered by gands4ever)

It's most likely calcium leaching out of them. You'll notice the same thing pretty much happens to brick on some homes. Some water and a stiff brush should do the trick, but you may find that it will reappear a few more times....(Answered by devilishblueyes)

What do I look for in a good quality decorative stones for the garden?
My mother had some decorative stones a friend gave her for a gift last year and they crumbled to bits of nothing this coming spring. THe material these stones obviouly could not stand the cold weather we get here in the Midwest. I want to give my mother some new decorative stones for the garden but I want to make sure they don't dissenegrate like the previous stones. The stones will stay outside all year, every year. look for stones that are native to your area. My father lives in a new subdivision that was once farm land. I got some great stones and boulders from there for my gardens. They're free and the developer wants them moved for the houses anyway. One of the developers is even piling them up by the street hoping people will take them away. Getting local rocks means they will obviously stand the weather, and if they don't they didn't cost anything anyway. check out new subdivisions in your area and even local farmers ...(Answered by Momof2inCanada)

Why would you want to put stones over an asphalt driveway - that would defeat the purpose. Perhaps your contractor told you that you needed 12 cubic feet of stones for the base - before paving the driveway. Otherwise, your driveway would crack due to water gathering underneath....(Answered by Bob)
