Automatic watering system for hanging plants?
Is there a tip or some kind of device that I can find at Home Depot or Lowes that I can screw onto a water bottle to put in with our house plants? I did a search & came up with ads to buy the water bottles & tips, but there has got to be a inexpensive way to do it. Like this:http://www.travena.co.uk/watering.htm

i don't know about the availability at the home stores but most landscape centers sell automatic feeders. small decorative ceramic figurines that you fill with water and it slowly seeps out into the soil. the bottom is porous and allows the water to be distributed over several days. some are plain and others more elaborate. can be a neat touch to a planter....(Answered by fireguy) |

Is it better to use a spray bottle or a watering can to water plants?
When I'm watering my indoor plants, I find it less messy to use a spray bottle, but I'm not sure that this is giving the plants sufficient water. The plants are all doing well, but I'm still back and forth on pouring or spray water.
I'm still confused- seems like people have different opinions on the topic!

Everyone who has answered so far has part of the answer right. Here's some more thoughts:
1. Misting is fine for most houseplants - It provides moisture and creates a little more humidity around the plant which most houseplants - tropical themselves - like. It is not a bad idea to make sure that the soil in which the plant is potted stays moist. If you can do this by misting you are fine. To test whether the soil is moist enough, you need a sophisticated moisture meter - your finger. Stick it in the soil. ...(Answered by Bug D) |

It has got to be sun, soil, or water.
If you are worried about overwatering, then you can poke your finger into the soil: then water only if the soil feels dry.
The soil could be depleted & in need of some fertilizer. I keep a tiny bottle of liquid fertilizer for my office plants. Just follow directions on the bottle. Also, if they have been in the same soil for a while, there could be a build up of mineral salt deposits. Repotting with fresh soil should take care of that issue.
If they are in need of more sun, then ...(Answered by punkypuma) |

I actually save money on watering with my automatic sprinkler system. Portions of it run on drip, it sprays my hanging baskets and keeps just the right amount of water on my lawn without run-off. The key is the timer and the zones you set to automatically water at the precise time of day the gardens, lawns and plants need the water for exactly the amount of time that plant material needs water. It does take some planning when the system is installed, but it is well worth the savings. No more hand watering, over watering, ...(Answered by eskie lover) |

How often should I be watering my houseplants? I've got a rubber tree plant, and lipstick plant...?
a wandering jew, a few ivy plants, a motherinlaw tongue and an umbrella plant. I water them all about once a week, but they are all just barely hangin on! None of them are thriving. I've killed plants before by watering them too often. My house is always dry in the winter, and I don't have too many windows where they can get good sunlight. I almost feel guilty just lettin these guys hang on like they do. They've been doin it for years, now!
Most are in different rooms, and I'm so segregational- they each ... (Asked by royrox) |

from my experience working in a greenhouse wandering jews need to be kept quite moist-meaning let the surface dry out a bit (less in hot weather, more in cool weather when the days are short) before watering again but never let the soil dry out completely. Mother-in-law tongue is a succulent plant so it is best to let it dry completely before watering it again-it can actually be kept dry for quite a while without being harmed (unless it is in the baking hot sun in the middle of parking lot in july:) although they are more tolerant of being ...(Answered by redpyramid) |
