What are the green bugs on my impatiens? They're not aphids...?
They are roughly the size of aphids, but they are fat and rarely move. They have infested my impatiens and cause the foliage to wither and die. What are they and how do I get rid of them? I have tried wiping the leaves with diluted dish detergent, but they keep coming back. Any suggestions? I'd prefer not to use pesticides, but may as a last resort.

Without seeing the insect, my guess is that you either have aphids OR thrips. Thrips are slightly smaller than aphids and are quite commonly found feeding on impatiens. Since there are many species of aphids, you might be seeing one that you've never seen before.
My suggestion is to go to your local hardware store and find a product that contains the active ingredient called: "Imidacloprid". It is a very safe insecticide that is mixed with water and then applied to the soil... where it is then taken up by the roots and translocated to the foilage ...(Answered by jazzmaninca2003) |

In the NW Phoenix Area, Does Any1 Know of a Place to get Seeds for a Decent Price?
I went to the Super WalMart the other day & they only had 3 types of seed left. The stand was 99% empty.
I know Target had Verbena but wanted $2.29 for the packet. Which is high. U would think Verbena being an Arizona Native, it wouldnt b so expensive.
So since my 2 favorite places have been wiped out at the Bell & Grand area, Im on the hunt for Verbenas, Lemon Mint & a bunch of others. As well as a few different Ornamental Grass seeds.
Or if U dont live in Az, where I could find some ... (Asked by Bridget E) |

Try a different Wal-mart, the valley is covered in them, also K-mart, Home Depot & Lowes, all are relatively close to your area. There is also a farm store on Cave Creek Rd & Bell that may be another option. Try the Nursury at Cave Creek & Thunderbird across from the Denny's, I assume it is still up and running. Moved out of the area a few years back, but should be able to help still....(Answered by Know it all?) |

Organic Answer to Cucumber Beetles?
My gf is an avid gardener, though her vegetable garden has a single prolific pest... Cucumber (or Squash) Beetles. She's tried all sorts of ways to wipe the little swines out, to no avail. She's trying to keep to an organic growing ethic, but nothing so far seems to work against them; she's tried releasing ladybugs in her garden, organic-based pesticides... but the bugs just do not give up the ghost.
I'd hate to see her break her organic garden rule over these critters, so - does anyone out there know a good way to get rid of Cucumber Beetles (preferably ... (Asked by mondo_kane) |

My Poor Jade Plant?
I have always wanted a Jade plant, first one I got had a small batch of four, which I very quickly killed off two of the sprouts, and slowly the other two. I realize now I over watered them. I was given a rather large plant, well, a foot high at Christmas, and I put it in a window, because the pot was larger than my window sill, I anchored it there so it would get lots of sunlight. I pulled it down yesterday because it has now grown above my window frame, it's now almost a ... (Asked by Kendra) |

Not sure what the white spots are, but if they are wiping off, keep wiping! It's actually a good thing to clean the dust off houseplants anyway; dust and dirt close up the pores of the plant so it can't "breathe," so wiping all the leaves down with a dampened cloth would be good for the plant. And yes, you can help to balance the plant by turning the barer side toward the sun. If it is so off-balance that the pot is tipping, you can prune the longest and heaviest branches back a bit and ...(Answered by sonomanona) |

White substance on clay pots?
A few months ago I potted some great greenery in clay pots and put them on my kitchen windowsill. I used Miracle grow potting soil and also a wonderful additive called Root Blast which has made my plants thrive well. Recently the clay pots are becoming covered in a white powdery substance that I can wipe off, but it comes right back. What is it caused from?

It's just a leaching of fertilizer salts. The plant may be over fertilized. If that is the case, flush it with water quite a few times to rinse away the excess, and continue to wipe off the pot....(Answered by jaycubb) |

the usual cause of yellowing in houseplants is lack of light. However, as strange as it may seem, dont move them. Your plants just went into shock because of the move and change of light.....Plants like the Dracaena can change from high light to low light but they have to lose some leaves to do it. Dont rotate your plant. Just keep it watered every two weeks or so, (only water when the soil is dry about 1 inch below surface) also, I recommend not cutting off any apparently dead leaves until they are brown. ...(Answered by slats) |
