Need a quick fix for old, worn hardwood floors.?
I'm selling my wonderful old Craftsman home, but the hardwood floors are AWFUL. Finish is completely worn thru in places (like in high traffic areas) and it's gonna be a bear to clean. I'm wanting to sell it quickly and cheaply and need to make the floors look decent for showing to prospective buyers. I'm sure they will want to completely restore the floors, but at my asking price, I really can't spend a lot to restore them myself. Any ideas???

They need to be sanded through the finish with a commercial floor sander, and a new stain/sealer put on. You can do this yourself and rent the tools.
Please don't try that..."Rejuvenate" as seen on tv!...(Answered by noskwik2) |

How do I preserve the worn/chippy paint on my old primitive furniture?
I have purchased an early 1900's pantry that has the wonderful crackled original paint which is peeling off. I want to preserve the paint that's there but keep the old shabby look. I don't want it to look shiny or new. Any suggestions?

hello, i am a painter. without seeing your new pantry, i cannot judge the severity of peeling paint. if it's not peeling much at all (maybe one or two spots) you could probably get away with putting a couple of coats of (low-lustre) polyurethane on it. if the peeling is moderate or severe it will have to be removed first.. otherwise anything you put on top of it, will just peel off with the paint. then you can use one of several faux finishing techniques to duplicate your desired finish. i really suggest taking a ...(Answered by lj) |

Nylon wears best, and with the newest of the nylons being softer, Tactess, Caress these feel really good on your feet. Nylon also cleans well. Most nylons will come with some sort of built in stain resistant, such as Stainmaster, R2X (Shaw Industries branded stain resistant formula), 3M StainRelease. Be sure your carpet has more than just Scotchguard. Scotchguard is only a topical spray that will come off when the carpet has it's first cleaning. Don't confuse Scotchguard with Scotchguard StainRelease. StainRelease is good as it is a built in product. Nylons will ...(Answered by damsel36) |

Is rayon a fabric that will wear well?
I'm having a chair recovered because I still love the style of it. Most of the fabrics I like have a lot of Rayon in them. My mother says she doesn't think Rayon wears well. I really love these fabrics but, I don't want something that won't wear well. I have 2 children. I'd appreciate your advice here. Thanks.
These are medium weight fabrics from an upholstery/decorating shop. They are a blend of Rayon and other fibers.

It used to be that rayon was a risky fabric for just about anything. Even the Hawaiian shirts had to be dry-cleaned. And 100% rayon is still a bad choice for hard wear.
But I found this web site that says they have new ways of processing rayon so it's not as vulnerable. Plus, if it's a blend, the other fibers will add strength.

Really, the big enemy of upholstery is dirt and spills. Does rayon clean well? That's a question I don't know the answer to....(Answered by MailorderMaven) |
